Question Battery & Brake Idiot Light

Hello...I have a 2000 Nissan Frontier 2 dr. The battery & brake light on the dash stay on for about 4 minutes, then they go away, unless I restart the truck. Has happened every time now for the last week. It never did this in the past.

Do I need to go to the dealer or is this a relatively easy fix?

Truck is automatic and does not have power windows.

Suggestions/ advice appreciated.

Thanks.

OKay I did some additional research here on the forum & it looks like it's the alternator.

If this is the common fix, please disregard my post, if not, please advise.

Beside Napa or Advance can should I go with the genuine nissan part or is aftermarket reliable?

Thanks again!

Advance Auto or Auto Zone may be able to check your charging system and let you know if it is in-fact the alternator before you sink money on one. I've had good luck with rebuilt alternators in the past, they normally come with a 90 day warranty, and if they are going to fail, they normally do right away!

Frontier2000,

I used to have a 1977 Datsun KC pickup. I bought it new and kept it for 24 years until I traded it in on a 2000 XE KC. I had to replace the alternator on it quite a few times.

My mechanic finally told me to buy a Datsun alternator as
when they rebuilt one they went through everything. The
other 2 brands I got did not hold up very well. My mech-
anic said that a lot of rebuilders only fix what is wrong with
the alternator/starter instead of doing a complete rebuild.

That has been several years and things may not be the same now, but just to be safe I still would go with the Datsun/Nissan rebuild.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all of the information. I'll go down to the Advance Auto and see if they can do the diagnostic. In the event I do need one, can you recommend any specific online sellers that do quality replacements or rebuilds?
