K&N Series 63 Intake Update...

Well, my engine just blew! (I'm kidding, of course). I have a post already lower down about this intake, but it's a reply to another post, so in case anyone hasn't seen it and wants a little more info on this intake, here goes: The series 63 isn't made from aluminum, so heat soak should be less; it is an easy install, and the results are impressive. There is noticeably more airflow at all rpms and under full throttle, the engine really opens up around 3500+ rpms, and the intake sound is really bad@ss. I can feel a noticeable difference in accelerating, but mostly from around the 3700 rpm mark up, which coincides with K&N's dyno readings..........the intake noise is not much unless you're at full throttle, so it's not too noticeable until you want it to be, and not obnoxious even then. K&N's dyno shows a 14.27 hp increase with this system; if so, then the 4.0 is right at 280hp at the crank now; I definitely recommend it for the $300+/- it costs, and driving is fun once again.......now for an exhaust so I can get nearer to 300 hp....it's never enough, though

So is the filter box and stuff the same on the 77 you think? Im betting the only differece is the tubing, plastic is good for another 3 HP...Intersting

Not sure if the diameter of the tubing may be different, but it appears the filter enclosures are similar, if not exactly the same.....I'm not sure where the other 3 hp come from; I wouldn't think heat soak would cause the difference, but then I'm no physicist. I do want to get an exhaust soon & find some place nearby to dyno the thing; hopefully we can squeeze 300 hp out of these 4.0s with intake/exhaust setups

I think you may be pushing it to get 300 HP with just an intake and exhaust! I was under the impression the that most of these after market intakes will result in a real world gains of between 7 to 10 HP, and the aftermarket exhaust only net about a real world gain of between 4 to 7 HP. So, on the high side you'd really only gain about 17 HP at the rear wheels with the best setup on the market, and only about 11 to 12 with the modestly priced ones! These numbers are based on actual dyno resuts I've seen, not the claims of the manufactures! The biggest claims I've seen from manufactures are 12 HP for a cat-back exhaust and 15 HP for an intake which still puts you at only 292 HP! Realistically, I think if you can get a real world RWHP rating of 280, you'd be doing great!

I think you're right, but it's fun to wish, anyway.....this 4.0 won't ever be even close to my LSII Chevy, but I'm gonna do what I can to open it up a little more! If I could get 280 hp to the rear wheels, that would be awesome, but I think that would translate into about 325-335 or so at the crank....man, time for a supercharger I guess!

side note: these 4.0s are impressive even when just left stock, (especially considering that my mother's '96 Impala SS with the LT1 350 was only producing 265 hp with the cast iron heads & block).....not bad, Nissan, not bad at all!

I don't understand how manufacture come up with those numbers. With an exhaust and intake you might get 10-12 HP. I guess they figure those numbers with a fully modded NA truck?

I'm with you! Unless they have the capability of really controlling the environment while performing the dyno, I don't understand how their numbers can be so much more than the numbers real people get after installing the same parts on identical vehicles! Maybe they purposely skew the calibration of the dyno to get better results! One would think they'd risk the chance of a law suit for false advertising if they did though...

As I understand it, they are rating the horsepower at the engine (crank), and not at the rear wheels, which is going to be somewhere around 25% (I think) less due to the hp loss through the drivetrain.....more in autos, a little less in manuals. I know my '99 Z28 was rated at 305 hp, but there's no way that was rear wheel hp; most people who had dynoed them stock were only getting around 265-285 (if I recall correctly) at the wheels, which is more in line with what it felt like, at least SOTP. I'm sure some of these aftermarket companies are very likely to embellish their numbers, and probably do tons of tests before publishing the absolute highest (as opposed to the average) numbers obtained under the most perfect circumstances....good for marketing purposes, I guess.
