I know I know. You're asking yourself, "How the hell did this idiot runout of gas?" Well long story short, I was picked up from the airport in my truck and the gas light was on. The person that drove it said that it just wennt on. I drove it around the next day thinking i had atleast another 3 gallons in the tank. well i ran out of gas after about 30 miles. so much for 3 gallons.
anyway the question is, What just happened to my fuel system? i only have 4500 miles on it. do i need to throw in some fuel additive or injector cleaner?

I know some early fuel injection systems had to be primed to run again after being run dry. My '04 service manual just states that the MIL may come on but should go off "after a few trips" and only tells you to take it to the dealer if the MIL stays on. Did your MIL come on? Is the truck running OK now?
AND WHAT KIND OF IDIOT RUNS OUT OF GAS!!! j/k

Modern motors are built both idiot proof and bullet proof. Not that I'm accusing you of being an idiot or a bullet, and not that I've never run out before. I just get embarassed when I run out as I coast into the gas station but don't quite make it to the pump. Modern motors are really very tolerant of running out of gas. The biggest danger is on older vehicles with a rusty tank or just years of crap in the tank. Sometimes this gets pulled into the line and gums stuff up.
You should be totaly fine
I've heard it said that running the tank empty can damage the fuel pump because it can over heat with out the fuel running through it to cool it. But after thinking about the logic behind that, it doesn't make sense either because if the engine runs out of fuel, it stops running, and if the engine stops running, the fuel pumps stops as well! So, I really can't see how it could cause any damage, if this isn't your weekly routine! (Like my wife who refuses to refuel until the idiot light has been on for at least 50 miles!)

thanks guys. first time this ever happened and will certainly be the last. the engine shut off smoothly and never tried to keep going so i think the fuel pump is okay. i was just worried about residue in the injectors. runs just like it did before.
Not to hijack this thread, but at what point, as in how many gallons and/or miles left, should the gas light come on? I just bought my 2005 SE CC 4x4 and was curious.
