my 2000 frontier v6se fuel mileage prob

hi, i have been driving my truck for more than a year now and had my gas mileage in the highway at 15mpg and 12 in the city. Is there any way to improve this? or is it normal for this truck. i have been doing regular change oils and air filter change every 10k miles, but never checked my plugs. i bought the truck used with 75kmi on it. right now it has 96kmi.
help please
thanks

I would think that 15/12 is a bit low...mine has 110,000 miles (2000 4wd,v6-3.3) and has always done a mixed city/highway of 18-20.

I dunno man, My old 4x2 '02 CC got about 15MPG average, that was with a bit of city driving. Would do about 200 miles before I hit 1/4 tank, I would fill it then. However, keep in mind, Im young, and get on the gas a bit.

Check to see if your MAF is clean? If it isnt, the computer could be using tables, which would cause it to run a bit rich.

Did the truck have its timing belt replaced by the previous owner or have you replaced it since you've owned the truck? It's overdue if the timing belt has never been changed. I'm wondering if there is a timing problem caused by a slipped (old belt) or mis-installed (new) belt. Are any "check engine" lights indicated? Has the truck gone through an emissions check and how good (or bad) were the numbers? Unless you have a "check engine" light on I'd be less concerned about the plugs and ignition system.

My "LOW FUEL" light comes on at about 235-255 miles.Averages between 15-17 with mostly city driving.

i never changed teh timing belt nor checked the emmission of the truck coz when i bought it at 75k mi from the dealer, they said they changed the timing belt already. no check engine or anything lights up. the most i got out of a tank is around 260, all highway. if i use it purely on city driving , i barely reach the 200 mark.

When you bought it, did the dealer indicate it had been given a recent tune-up? If not, and those are still the original plugs, it could very well be a contributing factor. Granted, just changing the plugs isn't going to up your gas mileage 4-5 mpg, but it could help some. I would also change the PCV Valve, if equipped. Also, maybe check the fuel injectors to ensure they are working properly, if the fuel is not being sprayed at a fine mist, there may not be full combustion which would lead to wasted fuel. Not sure how to check other emissions sensors if there is no code, but I remember my 94 Ranger was getting horrible gas mileage right before one of the sensors (can't remember now which) failed, and I had no idea why until it failed, but after it was replaced, the mpg went back to normal! Most of these things are far beyond the normal shade tree mechanic's expertise and capability. Finding a good, reputable mechanic you trust would be the best solution! Good Luck...

I get the 19-20 driving mostly rural highway. Good advice already given, but do you know someone with one of the OBED2 handheld terminals that you can plug into the truck and read the codes? Best bet is one of the engine control sensors is going/gone bad.

I average about 16 on my 2000 V6 4wd. I have AFI intake and iridium plugs. Everything else is stock, but its all been newly replaced...Timing belt, plugs, wires, pcv, etc. If i wanted better mileage I guess I'd buy a sentra, but that wouldn't be nearly as fun!

Mileage of 12/15 is significantly lower than normal. Do you have a 4X4? Could it be that you are in 4H all the time?

You have a lot of theories from this board. All require you to spend $$$ to go see the car doctor. It will be worth it.
