Question 95 Ka24E "clattering"

I (with more experienced help) just rebuilt my ol' 95 KA24e. Here is a list of things changed or reworked: Rings, honed cylinders, lapped valves, all gaskets, rod & cam bearings, head milled, water pump, radiator, clutch, pressure plate, slave & master clutch cylinder. i think thats about it.

but heres the problem, the engine is louder than should be, its a tapping or clattering sound. any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanx

Start with the spare parts. after every rebuild you should have a few unused parts

Is the rattling all the time or just on initial start up? hot? Cold? Comming from the valve cover or the oil pan (use the rubber hose in your ear trick)? You did put oil in it...right?

left over parts

I have about 5-6 extra bolts, only one would concern me, its about 3 or so inches long.

as for the noise it sounds like it is comming from the top of the motor, towards the rear. Under the valve cover by the number 4 cylinder.

OK I was only kidding about the spare parts thing, you really shouldn't have any leftover parts.
The KA24E engines have a timing chain that is tensioned by oil pressure. the factory oil filter has a valve in it that prevents the oil from draining out of the top half of the motor into the oilpan. when you go to the common Fram...ect, filters, the oil drains back down and you get a loud clattering from the very rear of the motor upon initial startup, but it goes away in a matter of seconds; once oil pressure is built up by the pump. Maybe this is you prob, maybe not.

My guess is you got air in the HLA's (Hydraulic Lash Adjusters). When you remove them you have to be careful not to get air in them or you must bleed them before reinstallation. Additionally if you had the whole head apart and you didnt shim everything correctly youll get all kinds of bad noises. Japanese motors are built to nice tight tolerances, after all.

If it's only at startup, it's probably a chain tensioner or like johnnyhammers said, an oil filter w/o an anti-drainback valve.

Sounds like you get to crack it open again
