Frontier Roof Rack Bike Carrier

Hey guys,

I just got my first nissan and am loving it so far! i have an '04 crew w/ the 5ft bed. I go camping often and would like to take a couple of bikes... was looking into the Yakima anklebiters, but man, that's pricey... for the ones i found new on ebay, it was approximately $110/anklebiter, plus another $25 or so for something else that you need... i want to carry two bikes - so, i'm thinking close to $300!!!

what are your opinions on this? does anyone have the Anklebiters?

tks!

I use a Reese bike rack that fits into a standard 2 inch trailer hitch, cost about $100, and hold four bikes. Also, not as awkward or dangerous to load as a roof rack.

Yes the Yak's are expensive; almost inhibitively so. But I do like mine, and I've put a truly stupid load on them a few times and I think they and the associated bike would survive a mild wreck. They would be impossible to load/unload on an XTerra, but with a PU bed to stand in I think it's just fine. I might prefer the hitch mount system if I were going to carry nothing but bikes. It would be much easier to mount them, and clearance hight is not an issue. But approach and departure angles are an issue if you're off road. I like to say that the bikes being up high make it a pain in the keister to steal them, but I like the idea of mushing the loaded carrier on the back of the truck into a soft bush on the edge of a motel parking lot even better. Having to dig through a Bush just to start the theft process is a real good deterrant. Remember, thieves are lazy, but locks are also relatively easy to get around or through.

I'd agree that the hitch mount is probably the way to go, but the roof mounts definitely look cooler and have the potential to do other stuff like help out with 16ft., hell even 10ft. lumber and full sheets of plywood (I do this often).

I looked around a little a while back, but do they make roof racks for the king cab? I always see them on the CC and think they look good. They probably wouldn't look good on a short cab anyway.

I checked eBay and found these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nissa...spagenameZWDVW

i called about them and they said that the racks will fit up to 3" bars... they seem like a nice alternative, if they'd fit! hmmm...

Yeah, I forgot that I had seen your truck already when you told me about the billet grille. It does look pretty good. How much did you pay for that one?
