2002 intermitant A/C issue

Has anyone experierienced an A/C that sort of worked when it felt like it?

I've got one of these gremlins on my '02. I'm waiting around for whatever part to fail so I can get it repaired without paying a mechanic to guess and get it wrong at my cost and time.

I've got a few weird symptoms....

- I've replaced the relay (hoping it would be the culprit)

- A/C will work in the morning or after the car has cooled down (usually), when I leave my windows slightly open. That is to say, it usually won't work if I've closed my windows entirely (first run of the day)

- A/C will work in bypass (btw, bypass is hot on frontier; it will drain your battery when the engine is off)

-When it runs (not in bypass), A/C runs well (no on/off cycle indicating low refrig). Feels nice too...

- The problem first appeared after I spent a short period doing the old heavy foot (was in a hurry)..

Any suggestions or Info?

Thanks..

Besides the belt tension, it could be the A/C clutch. When the engine is off, look at the front of the clutch for excessive dust (like brake dust). I've had a couple of these go bad (not on my nissans) and they had a similar squealing noise.
