looping idle

Hello, I'm starting to notice a high idle then looping idle with clutch in (races up and down several times), usually when coming to a stop with clutch in. It's on a '99 Frontier with the 3.3 litre engine with 67 000 miles on it. All the basic tune up stuff has been done. Any ideas?

You should do a Search on idle. There should be several threads about this.

Some of the causes I remember:

Defective Wax Pellet (not even sure if that's used on a '99).
Vacuum leak.
Sensor (do you have any computer codes showing?).

unrelated, but if you're stopping you should have it in neutral with the clutch out, otherwise you're causing unecessary wear to the throwout bearing

Thanks for the reply. Do you use your engine for a quicker then normal stop? Where is the throwout bearing?

editing my own message

I imagine that this is not how to edit my query - anyhow, thanks all for your responses, I will check those things and be sure to try a search first in the future before posting. I did not know that there was a computer with codes, so I will go look for that.
Other symptoms (all with warm engine) - with truck moving, clutch in, idle stays at around 1200 rpm's and does not go down untill truck stops moving.

you can't truly use your engine for a quicker stop, the tires can only stop the car so fast, just pressing the brakes harder will stop you.

i'll let off and let the compression slow me, but when i shift out of gear i brake on brake pad alone... brakes are much cheaper and far easier to replace than a clutch...

the throwout bearing rides the shaft connecting the transmission to the clutch. when the clutch pedal is depressed, the throwout bearing presses on the clutch pressure plate, releasing the clutch...
