will a stock 1998 deck replace a 1996?

I posted this in audio, but i don't think the people who frequent that section give a crap about stock systems. So I'll give it a shot with the fronty lovers:

I've got a factory cassette deck in my 1996 HB kingcab (4 speakers). The unit has been dieing a slow death for a long time now. Would this unit replace it? (translation, are the harnesses identical?) Or will I have to splice wires?

I can make the extra room in my dash by pulling out the storage compartment. Thanks,

Eric

anyone have an idea? I looked at the Crutchfield web site and they sell the same wiring harness adapter kits for for all 95+ nissan trucks.

Yes, it should work. Almost all Nissan head units are interchangeable (except those with weird shaped face plates)... might want to pick and choose from the best ones available.

The harness from my wrecked 97 Harbody SE worked in my 04 frontier so everything should be fine.

thanks. i found some diagrams of the plug that goes in the back of the units, and they looked identical.

I was just wondering about one more thing: there are basically two main plugs that go into the unit. one handles mostly power issues, the other handles mostly speaker connections. If you look at the back of the 1998 unit I linked to, you can see what looks like a third plug near the corner. Is that some sort of preamp hookup?

Just to wrap up this thread fo anyone who might be interested later on: I did the swap tonight. I bopught a used CD/Radio/Cassette unit (the big one) from a 2000 Xterra to replace my stock cassette deck/storage pocket. The Wire harnesses match perfectly, and the newer unit fits the dash hole just right.

IMPORTANT: make sure you swap your HB's stock mounting bracket onto the new Stereo. To do this, you will have to reuse the new unit's screws. the screws in the side of the stereo are the same pattern, but the mounting bracket's screws are in different positions from one model to another.

Aside from that, it was plug and play. My dimmer even works!
