I just bought a 1998 Frontier with a little over 83,000 miles on it and it has a 4 cyl. engine. I know the previous owner that bought it new. The problem, sometimes when in 5th gear and crowding it a little on a pull, it will start missing. It acts like it may be confined to 1 cylinder. When this happens, the service engine soon light comes on. The miss will go away very quickly, maybe after running about 100 yards or so. The service engine light will stay on for about 2 days and go out. Sometimes at iddle, it smells like it is running a little rich. Also it smeels like it is runnign a little rich when on a pull. The rotten egg smell. The previous owner told me it happened to him before and he changed the spark plugs but did not see any change in it. Not sure but I think the air filter and fuel filter has been changed. Any suggestions before taking it to have a scan done????

That rotten egg smell is typical of a catalytic converter going bad. It would probably explain the check engine light too, the code would read something to the effect of "primary catalyst failure."
