When to change timing belt?

Hi, I recently purchased a 2000 Frontier C/C 4x4 SE with 140k km (84k mi) on it.
I see in the manual Nissan recommends changing the timing belt and plugs at
168k kms (100k mi). My last two trucks had timing chains and didn't require any work until over 220k km. My '84 Toyota SR5 pickup the chain broke at over 220k km and my '91 hardbody the chain guide broke at 240k km giving me a loud rattle. The local Nissan service manager suggests wear should be based on hours rather than mileage and to add 25% to the actual mileage to determine if it is time to change the belt. Based on his assessment my truck is overdue now. He also suggests getting it done before the colder, harder starting winter weather comes. Having no experience with timing belts I am wondering if this is an accurate evalution or is he just trying to get my business sooner than later?
If I go by the odometer I will get at least another year of driving before I get to 168k kms. Should I wait or play it safe and change it now? Has anyone had a belt break prematurely? I would appreciate any comments or suggestions? Thanks

wait it out, most of the time the manufacturer's assesment of timing belt wear is actually very conservative/premature, but good practice to follow to avoid problems...
