Battery to Starter Wire...01 Frontier

I am replacing the positive battery terminal on my 01 Frontier V6. After cutting the wire off the original terminal, I found that the wire from the starter will not reach the new terminal. I was going to run a piece of 4-gauge from the starter to the battery, but there is some sort of long, cylindrical metal or porcelain piece inline next to the starter.

My question is what is this piece and can I discard it to run my new wire?

Thanks.

John

Is it a resistor of some sort? I would NOT discard it. Can you maybe use a splice connector or distribution block to retain that portion of the factory wire?

My thought process is that they put it there for a reason, so leave it be...
