Hi all,
The low tire pressure alarm came on after a cold fornt came thru and dropped the temp to 55 degrees. THis the only and first time the low tire pressure alarm cam eon. Is this normal?? THanks for all replies.
Tire pressure fluctuates with the temperature. If you drive
the vehicle the tire pressure will increase as the tires warm up. It will decrease as the tires cool off.
That is why they tell you to check your tire pressure when the tires are cold.
The same thing happens as the air temperature fluctuates.
So yes, this is normal for the tire pressure to drop when the
outside air temperature drops.
You need to check and adjust your tire pressure every time
the outside temperature changes.

Temperature flucuations should affect all tires equally, I thought the air pressure sensor detected if one tire was lower than the rest. Is this correct, or will it alarm if all 4 tires drop an equal amount?

just wanted to share.
a co-worker who owns a 05 GMC Envoy can check the tire pressure for each tire individually with the built-in dash computer.
now, why couldn't Nissan do that for our models.
at least help us narrow down to which tire is low on pressure.

I am not sure but I would think it would monitor each tire individually or you could end up with all 4 tires losing pressure and never know it.
My valve caps show 34 psi and do not activate until the drop is about 28 psi. I saw my valve cap asow yellow and then red as it dropped.
I do not know what the computer does, but if you look at the indidual valve caps as you go around the truck you can
readily see which tires are low.

Gerald, your talking about those tire pressure indicators that you install for each tire.
Not sure if the Frontier has this feature, but on the 05 Pathfinders, each rim has a built in indicator to the computer to show when the tire pressure is low.
Like GMC's and Chevy's. but for Pathfinder, if the indicator is low, you have to check each tire because if does not tell you which one is low.
those color indicators, I'm assuming your talking about will tell you each tire pressure.

My valve caps are just silver metal caps, they don't do anything but cover the valve opening! Did your frontier come with those, or did you add them?
Mine has the colored indicators.

But the salesman said it was just something Nissan had a 3rd party doing for a while and they've stopped doing it. He said some guy would come out to the lot after the vehicles were delivered and put them on. I'm not sure they're of great value and they'll probably just get stolen.
To answer some of the above questions:

Tire pressure rises and falls depending on the heat caused by the vehicle’s operation and the outside temperature. Low outside temperature can lower the temperature of the air inside the tire which can cause the lower tire inflation pressure. This may cause the low tire pressure warning light to illuminate. If the warning light illuminates in low ambient temperature as described above, check the tire pressure for all four tires. Adjust the tire pressure to the recommended COLD tire pressure shown on the Tire and Loading information label to turn the low tire pressure warning light OFF.
My Frontier has the sensors inside the tire attached to the valve stems or actually vice versa. I saw them when my
tires were being dismounted for the wheel polish job.
I also have the indicator caps you are talking about. These
were on the truck when I purchased it so I assume they are
part of the low tire pressure warning system.
I'll check with my dealer the next time I am in.

I wonder if I even have the electronic TPMS. According to the Nissan parts list, I'd have to have special valve stem cap (Code: TPMS-CAP) and not the color indicator ones above?
Is there any way to tell aside from letting some air out of a tire and driving over 20mph?

All of the 2005 models have the TPMS. Not sure about any of the previous years though.

I changed out my caps after one was lost/stolen. Works fine as long as you get metal caps. I think I got mine at AutoZone.

I went by the dealership to pick up my bed divider and to-day and looked at the Frontiers on the lot. They all had plain metal metal valve caps.
I asked the service writer and she said that the Frontiers do not come with the indicator caps that I have. She also
said that the low pressure tire monitoring system will acti-
vate if one tire goes low or if all four go low.
My truck was a dealer transfer and the transfering dealer added the indicator valve caps. A nice feature in that it will let me know which tire is low if the system is triggered.
My dealer adds the wheel locks on their trucks, which they did not do on my truck. I don't like them anyway as they
are a hassle to use. I also worried about the key stripping
out with the torque they use on lug nuts these days.

I guess it works with the little indicator caps since the base is metal? I don't know. Haven't had a low tire yet. Thanks for the info.
