Review of New aFe Intake Kit

I've just completed installation of the new aFe intake kit on my 2005 Frontier; to see a review, complete with pics and dyno test, click here:

Great write up Rev! I see that you gained a good chunk of higher RPM HP, but it looks like you lost a couple ft-lbs of torque. Am I reading those charts right?

Edit: I take that back. You lost 2 ft-lbs of peak torque around 4100RPMs, but the overal torque curve stays higher through the rest of the range. Good stuff!

Good catch, Tiger. I always hate to use peak numbers without posting the entire dyno graph. Yes, peak power was down slightly (actually well within the margin of error) but there were really nice gains in the upper end--exactly what you'd expect to see by freeing up the breathing.

Yet another very nice write-up

It's great to have real before and after numbers on these add-ons.

Can I assume you're still keeping track of MPG? Do you think the aFe unit will provide any gains there?

I would also be intrested in how the intake and the cat back impacted your MPG.

Yes, I'm keeping detailed mileage numbers but it'll take a while. First, I'm still on the same tank as I did the dyno tests on. Second, I can't resist hearing the intake howl so I'm not driving very efficiently right now.
My best guess is that there will be a slight improvement (maybe 1-1.5 mpg). Certainly not enough to justing buying one, but maybe enough to offer as an excuse to your wife.

Assuming 20 mpg and a 1mpg improvement. $2.50 a gallon gas. This thing will pay off at about 37,000 miles! That is a heck of a good excuse. In fact, Frontier owners are wasting precious resources by not getting one now!

Another great write up Reverend biker! Keep us posted on MPG.

Factory Warranty?

Does adding any of the aftermarket items void the warranty?

The old warranty issue, eh? Under the Magnusson-Moss Act of 1975, a manufacturer may not void your warranty simply because you have installed aftermarket performance parts. They may only deny warranty coverage if they can prove that the non-stock part caused the failure. Sometimes it can be a sticky issue; your dealer can't deny you warranty repairs on your A/C blower because you installed a custom exhaust, but if your engine has a couple of burnt valves he could argue that they were as a result of a lean condition caused by the exhaust. I've never encountered a warranty problem with aftermarket parts, but my dealer is pretty friendly.

Arrow

for those of you who have the aFe, $220 is the cheapest price for it?
also, are they the only ones that will make it for the Frontier/Pathfinder?
I have a 05 Pathy.
I'm thinking why doesn't K&N come out with a kit, at least universal one for the Frontier/Pathfinder.
one more thing, installing one, does it void the warranty?
I know some dealers can be jerks about mods such as that.
thanks

One of the most important elements is missing from the graph. Can you post one with the air fuel ratios?

I put an intake on a Tacoma but the gains were not worth the 14.5:1 air fuel ratio that it ended up with.

K&N does have a cold-air kit specifically for the 05 Fronty. I just barely saw it on the Stillen website. It sells for about $320.00. They also sell the Volant cold-air intake system which I am not familiar with. It sells for a few dollars less. I was hoping somebody has installed either one and let us know how they perform.

so i know this sounds retarded but are intakes like that vulnerable to water getting into em? my ranger throws up huge water splashes when it rains/floods around here, and im guessin theres a good bit that gets into the engine bay. water+inside engine=caca.

btw yes i want a frontier (06 nismo 4x4 CC with a SLR long travel kit to be exact), but insurance would kill me right now
