I had less than 1,000 miles and got an idiot light. The old tire with the exclamation point icon. I stop and visually checked the tires and see nothing noticable. I thought I had a bad sensor.
When I got home I got my air gauge out (note to self to leave one in the vehicle) and checked the pressure and was amazed to see that one tire was at 26 pounds. No problem, I aired it up and off went the light.
Down side was the next day it was back as I was the proud new owner of a small nail in the right rear. I took it to my favorite tire shop and had them patch it from the inside and all is well.
Bottom line is the sensors are amzingly sensative to pick up that low of a pressure drop and while the sensor annoyed me at first, it did help point out a problem that needed fixed right before a long trip.
Well it probably picks it up as low at that pressure because that is the same pressure that was run in all those explorers that had there tires blow and then they rolled (The tires weren't bad, it was the pressure ford ran at. Firestone took the blame because it was the cheaper alternative to blaming Ford). I dunno, but that would be my guess at it.
Funny you should mention that. My son rolled our Explorer Sport 5 years ago with Firestones on it. Luckily he was alright and on the positive side that death trap was totalled. There were two flats and we could never prove anything.
What happens if you want to put aftermarket wheels on? Do they mess up the sensor? I am looking at an 05/06 Fronty in the next couple weeks/months and I want to lift it and run Mickey Thompson Classic II wheels? Anybody know the answer to this?

You can probably remove the sensors (which are part of the valve stem) from the old wheels and install them in the new wheels. I would think most wheels and valve stems are compatible.
