I just purchased a 2001 Nissan Frontier that has been well taken care of. I was under the hood having a look around and found something that I was not expecting. I had the engine running and noticed what sounded like an exhaust leak from the manifold. Upon further investigation, I found a threaded hole approximately 4 inches below the exhaust sensor. The hole appears to be the same diameter as the heat shield bolts. But, unfortunately there is exhaust come out of this hole. I just called a nissan dealer-ship, and the had no clue as to why it is there. The only thing that I can think of is that this was plucked at one time and the plug has come loose. Also, I was wondering if this lose of pressure could be causing which seems so far to be poor gas milage. Any help would be appreciated.

That's probably where one of the bolts that hold the heat shield go. Just plug it by finding a replacement at any auto part store.
