SR and RB ECU questions

Does the ECU advance/retard timing on RPM, airflow, knock, none, all? How does it know when to change the timing?

i think its more to do with knock, as when the ECU detects excess knocking, it retards the timing to compesate, but ECU also know what timing they are supposed to run at, and have tendancy to return timing back to its preset level gradually, especially if you manually adjust it.
