My brother has a 97 sentra GXE automatic. Odometer says 169000. Recently it died while my brother was driving it and it has not started since. We pulled the code I dont have the P number right now, but the computer defined it as random cylinder misfire. The engine barley turns over but there is spark, fuel in the filter, and a good battery. We just got it and the car has had a rough life and we are unsure of what the problem is. Any ideas? Thanks.:lame:

I bought these some time ago and did not have good luck with them. I pulled them out soon after I got them. The light ouput was not strong enough for me. Follow the link for pics on my white Sentra.

My car broke down today, I am looking for some help determining what happened.

I was pulling out of a hotel and there was a big dip, right after going over this dip my car shut off, all the lights on the dash came on (battery, oil, check engine, etc) and my RPM's dropped.

I pulled off the road, and I tried to start my car again but it would only crank and not turn-over to start.

I sat for a while, checked a few things like my oil, all the connections, battery, etc, and after sitting for 30 minutes I was able to start my car again.

One thing I did notice is I seemed to have lost gas, I was at a quarter tank and I was closer to empty by the time I got it started again?

I got my car started, and drove about 1-2 miles to my house, the car felt like it was driving just fine.

I am not sure what to do now, do I just try to keep driving or what?

The dreaded oil leak nightmare... Started at about 160k miles (now at 169k). I thought it was the gasket on the bolt on the oil pan but it was to my own ignorance that wet dreams rarely come true. I degreased the entire engine and placed a piece of cardboard underneath the car to try to pin point where the leak was coming from. Looks like the front crank seal to me. My question is, is there anything I can do to fix or even prevent the oil from leaking til I can afford to put a new crank seal in as I do not think i can tackle this project on a front wheel drive car.

Hey I have a 96 Sentra 1.6 GXE Manual transmission. I started to have starter problems about 4 months ago. Started with nothing engaging at all when the key was put in the "run" position on the ignition switch with the clutch fully depressed. I took the starter out and had it tested at Autozone about 4 times and each time passed the bench test. I took the starter relay out underneath the dash board (in my particular sentra the starter relay isn't in the relay box underneath the hood) tested it (passed) and put it back in. I then put the starter back in and when i turned the key to run it sounded like the solenoid was engaging put the starter motor was not. My guess is the reason the starter wasn't making any attempts to start at all was the relay was loose underneath the dash. All i get is a fast clicking noise and all the lights that are on dim with the clicking noise. I have had the battery checked (passed) replaced both the negative and positive cables too and from the starter (2 gauge for positive, 4 gauge for negative) and still have the same problem. I have tried jump starting the battery but still get the fast clicking noise. The contacts on both the battery and starter have been cleaned with a steel wire brush so that is not the problem. Before I buy a new starter is there anything else I can try to get the engine to turn over?

apparently somewhere i went wrong. i tried to take into account that the holes numbers in one of the harnesses was different between the two setups, but i might've mixed a couple up. i can find them (i took some before pics) but my REAL concern is that i have 6 extra wires. they are the wires that were in holes 10,39,36,33,30,28.

I haven't wired in my harness yet. it just seems really wrong to me right now that i have so many extra wires.

where'd I go wrong??

Hey folks, been a long time since I've logged onto this site. :)

I need some troubleshooting help. I have a 1999 Nissan Sentra 1.6 that seemed to have a clutch issue the other day. I went to shift into 2nd, but it just free-rev'd. Speedo goes up with the RPM's. Clutch pedel felt fine. There was a slight grinding noise, didn't change with the pedal pressed in. No grinding from the transmission while shifting through the gears, clutch in or out. Shifted through gears as if the engine was off. Absolutely no power to the drivetrain, and the symptoms were instant (shifted into first fine, started driving down the street, went to shift into 2nd and nothing. No funky noises, bangs, etc.).

It seemed to act quite a bit like when my Z's pressure plate collapsed, so I thought it was probably the clutch (I knew it was a bit worn - would very slightly slip if you tried to aggressively drive it).

When we pulled the clutch off, it looks relatively OK. The throwout bearing is pretty shot, and one of the little clips on the side mangled. The fingers on the pressure plate look maybe a bit worn, but not broken. Clutch is paper thin, but not in pieces.

I'm now terrified that it's going to be put back together and it'll still be broken, and then I'll be utterly broke and still without a car. I just spent over $500 Monday replacing the axles, front wheel bearings, wheel seals, front hubs, rotors, etc. Spent another $400 so far on this clutch ordeal, with another $100 on the table to finish the job (if it's not a bad transmission). FFS, this was supposed to be a cheap car to get me 3-4 miles to work and back, and I've already spent more on repairs than the car in the 2 weeks that I've driven it.

It should have been finished tonight, but the clutch kit that Autozone gave me has a funky throwout bearing. It doesn't have the little notches on the "wings" that the clips fasten to, in addition to one of the clips being mangled and the dealership already being closed for the evening. :balls:

*sigh*...

It's been a hell of a week.

P.S. Any way to tell if a head is cracked besides removing it? I've also got a 1995 Nissan Altima with what I thought was a blown headgasket, but now the mechanic has me worried it's a cracked head. Doesn't run hot, but runs very very rough, barely idles, hard to restart, cyl 1 is dead, cyl 2 is barely firing, white smoke out of the back and also coming slightly from somewhere under the hood (I assumed exhaust leak until mechanic mentioned the head), exhaust coming out of the radiator cap as well when opened.

I'm beginning to think that I've just flushed 6 months of savings down the toilet with these two cars, lol. :loser:

as the topic says, how many miles do these 1.6 liter engines usually last? How many miles does yours have? I have a 96 sentra with the 1.6 and it has almost 280,000 miles on it. It is an automatic. it runs great, but very very tired. I think that the 0 - 60 time on it is actually slower than the quarter mile!! but i can't complain it burns no oil, none at all, and i get about 40 miles to the gallon. 43 was the most she saw just this past weekend. I usually run it really hard, just simply cuz it has to to get up to speed. typically seeing over 5000 rpms every single day. It is the original engine and drivetrain. it was my aunts car up until the day the got rear ended and i bought the car for 200 bucks. Always ran amsoil it it, so to sum it up approx how many more miles do you think i could conceivably get out of her? Thanks a ton
