Well, as I said previously, have a 1986 Pulsar NX. Not the greatest shape but from my mildly inexperience view it's in decent shape.
Well, had it running today for the first time in several months, doesn't seem the battery is taking a charge, but then again may not of have it running enough to take a charge, and quite possibly the battery needs to be rejuiced. As it was new about a year ago but it has been sitting and not in use.
Anyways, have a few other questions, like a few others I've read, the headlights have come up, which never happened previously, but wouldn't go back down.
Also, I'm wondering if a poor old exhaust would cause a drop in RPM when it hits about 2K, with more gas it stays steady and revs up but if I keep it right around 2k it'll die off every so often.
It seems to run good overall though, having 120k on the ode and most likely little maintenance recently. Idles good. just alittle over 1k, least from what I remember I believe it's good.
ANYWAYS, I'm wondering some general ideas of what you folks would do if you just picked up a fixer-up like mine? As well as ideas as to what to do when it won't drop into reverse and second and fourth go in but seem alittle loose, like it might rattle out?

If you are not sure of the cars maint history, I would probably look into doing all of the basics first. checking/changing the fluids and filters. and maybe giving her a tune up as well. once you have it running properly, I'd make sure I pulled all of the wheels off and checked the brakes thoroughly.
as for you tranny issue, maybe check a few things. the level of the gear oil in the tranny, clutch cable adjustment, make sure the rear motor/tranny mount is in tact and doing it's job, and you can take a look at the shifter linkage to make sure it is tight and there are no bad or loose bushings.
hopefully this will at least help get you started. Good Luck.

I think the first thing I would do is a compression test. Might save you a fair amount of money on turnup parts as well as other general maintance cost associated with putting a car back on the road after sitting for a while. And yes a clogged Cat converter can cause the engine to choke down mine did it between 2 and 3k. Just remember if it is the original exhaust it's 19 years old.
Well, after letting it run for awhile, seems like it stopped dying off alittle bit. Found out with a tester that the altenator is working but the battery is toast. So hopefully the tester is working. Going to have a friend come in and take a look at the tranny. I'll just have to pray that it's the linkage or something else small and not a bad tranny.
Alls going good so far. Not that I've gotten anywhere considering the time it's been in either myself or my friends possesion.
Honestly, if it's not going to cost too much I hope to learn alot with the car. And considering it's my first vehicle, hopefully I'll get it running good, and hopefully looking better. As I certainly like the look of the car.
I'll stop rambling now. Thanks for the information, and anything else on general maintenance/clean up would be appreciated.
Overall these cars aren't extremely difficult to work on. I'm not any kind of mechanical expert myself but I've learned a lot from my 85 Pulsar and mine is exactly like yours. I've fixed many things on mine myself and I had no idea what I was doing at first but this site was a tremendous help. As was mentioned above, definitely check the engine mounts. You could have a broken one. Also the other thing you need to look for and give attention to is rust damage. These cars will rust badly and quickly if left unchecked. Look in the rear wheel wells. Behind the shocks they will rust out real bad. Also pull off the bumpers and look behind them. You can get amazing amounts of rust there. I also had to cut out and replace my driver side floor pan so make sure you actually have a floor! As for the engine, I paid someone to swap a rebuilt E16s into mine as the one that was in it was not cared for and was all kinds of messed up. I haven't had any serious engine trouble since then. My only real trouble is a crap transmission. Anyway, enjoy the car. They are cool. At least I think so anyway. My friends all think I'm retarded of course but I like Pulsars.
Well, I think my chiltons has finally arrived. But of course the post office was out to lunch. So not sure yet.
I'll agree the cars don't look frightening difficult by any means. Very basic car. It'll definately have to be cleaned out on the underside. But everything is in fairly good shape from what I've seen so far. Surely haven't torn it apart yet though.
With some luck, most of the work well be maintenance and clean up(Interior, exterior, rust and build-up anywhere). My main surprise is the engine still runs strong(Well, strong for being a tiny little fella) as since I've had it it sat nearly a year through winter and everything.
Took a look at your site, pretty car you got there winstonsmith.
Anyways, besides getting it running smoothly and road ready. Trying not to make too many future plans. I'm thinking though if I have the money, or if I don't(And have a ghetto set up) I want a computer system running audio/video, just because I think it'd be more impressive. Like an old Bond car or something.
And I'll agree with you on the fact that few people know what the Pulsar is, fewer seem to like the look of it, but it does seem to turn heads, for bad or good I think it's an accomplishment.
