Air Injection Valve

I know my car has one and I know what it does but does it require any maintainence?? I've looked inside mine and it looks like it is filled with carbon or someother black crap. Should I clean this out, or is it supposed to be there?? And if I should clean it out, how would I do that???

It just helps your catalyst. If you have some spare time, I'd say go ahead and clean it. I'd use some brake cleaner to clean it.
