What engine do you have? If it's the CA, the CAS is actually attached to the end of one of the cam shafts.
If you're talking about the timing belt gear on the crank and the crank key getting sheared off you've probably got major problems. Like you've probably bent several valves.
As to why it would shear off.....not really sure.
Recently rebuilt a Honda F22A that sheared the crank key and we had to replace eight valves. Did a bomplete rebuild but the only damage directly related to the sheared key was the bent valves.
