Exhaust Manifold Swap

For all of us Here, I want to pass along some good information about the exhaust manifold on the GA16i engine.

I am always at my local wrecker yard and I noticed that there was a distinct similarity between the GA16i and the GA16DE exhaust manifold. First off the GA16i manifold is on my 89 Pulsar NX XE and I pulled the manifold off a 92 Sentra (which if you know nissans, has the GA16DE).

Similarities-
Exhaust ports are the same and have the same bolt pattern.
Gaskets are the same as well
Both are 4-1 design and the O2 sensor is located in the same place on each
The outlet size to the front pipe is the same and the gasket and bolts both line up just right.

Differences-
The Sentra Manifold is a little longer so the front pipe gets pushed down
The sentra manifold has only one emissions port on the left hand side and the pulsar has two

Now for the install-
The manifold from the GA16DE bolts right up on the head and the front pipe, so that is the easy part. The hard part is the fitting of the EGR pipe. If you use the pipe from the GA16i engine, you will be bending the original to make it fit. If you use the pipe from the GA16DE you will also be needing to bend it to make it fit. If you have the tools to do so then your best bet would be to manufacture a new pipe from scratch.
The larger pipe that is not present on the GA16DE engine is not needed. It is only there to pull air from the air cleaner box via the Air Induction Valve when you let off the throttle. Remove the AIV assembly, the secondary air line to the exhaust manifold and plug the vaccum line that went to the AIV.

The best thing about converting to the 91-98 sentra GA16DE manifold is that you can find Ready-Made headers for the 91-98 Sentra.

Good Luck

Techno-

Thanks for the info. Your '89 pulsar has a 1.6?

Any experience w/ CA18DE engines? I am very new to this Nissan thing... Anyway, I always wondered if one of the 2.0l manifolds could be used as a drop-in replacement in the 1.8?

It is always nice to discover the interchangeability of parts from various years...

... if you think of it ... your about at least 2 years late on the first one who tried a DE header on his Ga16i on the forum. Good thing taught you found it by yourself Anyway it is still a good thing to know the oem exhaust manifold will do as a replacement

Hey Crazy, this is good info to know, cuz if I hadn't found this i woulda sent my headers back with a nasty complaint lol. is there any way to add this to a sticky, or sticky it? wouldn't be bad to see dropped89's eurocam install up front as well.
