yes and no

if your engine never warms up high enough you'll suffer horrible gas mileage. And if you ever need to use your heater...well lets just say you'd be warmer walking. trust me on that one..story time...

my 70chevy...last winter i was coming home from visiting my then fiance, it was 15 below zero and my 165 thermostat (which doesnt do good for heater to begin with) stuck open....so for 3 hours i was freezing my ass off with maybe a 20 degrees inside the car. i even put cardboard in the radiator half way through the trip and it did no good. now i doubt you'll ever see that cold with your car but you see what i'm getting at.

Put a 180-degree thermostat back in. Without it, the car will not warm up at all, and that is vital for all the sensors to tell the ECM how to modulate fuel delivery. Your ECM will tell the carb to run full-rich all the time, and there goes your mileage.

Why was the car overheating in the first place? You should solve that problem first. Was it a bad 'stat? If so, replace it. Yeah those carbs suck when they are running rich, although money-wise its not much, they sip gas compared to most cars. Mickey Mouse fixes are no way to go, do it right.

If the thermostat being out makes the car run cool or at the right temperature, then the bad thermostat is the problem, if you put a new thermostat in and it still overheats/ runs hot, you need a new radiator. Don't flush it or wast money having it rodded out, just get anew one and save yourself the grief of replacing the headgasket.

Runing the engine too cold will contaminate the oil, and make the engine run poorly.

you might as well do the water pump too... they're good till they start leaking out the shaft or making odd noises though.
