Unhappy 1987 Pulsar DOHC CA16DE timing??

I was getting awful gas mileage and poor gas mileage. After several attempts at tune ups, went to garage that claims all sorts of trouble with timing belt, tensioner, etc. I spent much $$$. Picked up the car, drove it once, and the a ticking noise came from the right side of the engine. Garage told me to change the oil as it appeared to have gas in it (which I did). Still ticking garage told me to drive it. Which I did for maybe 40 miles when it just cut out on me in traffic. It started again once for a short period of time and then quit again. Any suggestions? It is back at the garage. Last time I stopped by he had the EMU out and was looking for a code.

my guess it is the CAS... it the thing bolted to the cam that make ignition works... its seems to me that this piece are changed alot on the CA serie engine as they go bad quite frequently... backfire could have come from a wrong set ignition (when it went)...

id start looking there 1st.

My first guess would be a bad ignitor. Small 3"x3" silver box on the d/s of the head. This box sends energy to the coils to fire the engine. Typical failure item on older CA's and unfortunately, a pretty expensive item to replace if buying a new part. Another problem with older CA's is the coil packs but it's unlikely they all went bad at once.

i have also experienced this ticking in the ride side just recently, it appears as though the timing belt must be worn, and from what i have read when it goes it goes hard so i do not want to drive it until i can replace it, any other possible causes?
