I've wanted to do it for a while but never had the time. I think it is pretty easy. The hard part is getting the right piston to TDC.

I did it on my E16S Engine.... not difficult at all, just take care to replace the head cover gasket... also to get #1 at TDC you can do it either by looking at the #1 position at the distributor cap or by feeling inside the #1 piston chamber by a rope and moving up the piston using a big wrench at the nut on the pulley side of the crankshaft. I dont know if the E16i has the same cylinderHead since mine was 8 valves and the E16i has 12 valves. I Think that the i model has some different rocker arms like the GA does and you must replace the shims on the top of each valve to adjust the lash.

both e16 and ga16 use the same pattern rockers...

the setup should be about the same ... e16i got 8 valve too... ga16 got 12... anyways... its a pretty easy job... get your hands on a feeler guage and flat screw driver and a 12mm key and thats about it !!.... (be sure to get the engine at normal running temperature)...

uh yep... i forgot about the running temp the first time and it was pinging a little when hot... but you have to do things faster when hot, an also more careful since it's hot in there...

I think that only the engines that came with an adjusting screw can be adjusted that way... the others have hydraulic lifters inside each rocher arm and what you have to change is the "contact surfase" on the top of the valve like GA16DE i'm not sure if all the E Series has adjusting screws.

Do you have to put the #1 cylinder at TDC or can you just look at the cam postition and see which valves are not being opened and adjust those, then turn the engine a bit until all the valves have been adjusted.

I think that you must put #1 at TDC and adjust the open ones, then turn one complete revolution and adjust the others... when you turn the crankshaft you feel the compression and sometimes you can hear it at the valves as air goes out the valve.

***** Hi guys, Just thought I'd step in and straighten out a few mistakes here. All E-series engines have the same rocker arms, with the adjustment screws in them. GA16i's do not. They have hydraulic lash adjusters in the rocker arm tips. They never need adjusting. The GA16DE has the select fit shims, that never seem to need adjustment. I have NEVER seen a GA16DE that needed a valve adjustment. In fact, my dealer doesn't stock a single shim [of any thickness]. That tells you how often they are needed. A good tip for adjusting valves on an E-engine, is to go one thousandth [.001"] tighter than the spec calls for. They call for .011" hot, and I have found that if you don't set them at .010", they will still tap a little when you are done. Just my .02. Cheers!
