I have a 1988 Nissan Sentra with a E16 Injected motor. (Throttle Body)
The problem is when the car is running under a load the engine seems
to be starving for gas or either has a bad spark problem. When I rev
the car sitting still the engine revs great and smooth. Then when I
take off the engine runs very rough and with anything more than half
gas pedal the car falls on it's face.
I had the engine rebuilt about 30K ago. I was having this problem
before rebuild but never this bad. Also the car is getting very bad
gas mileage. 14 mls. To a gallon. I was getting around 26 to 28
I can't figure out if this is a spark problem or a fuel problem. I
replaced the very expensive fuel pump with no luck fixing the problem.
Thank for any help or recommendations of where to get help. This
seems to be a problem that could get very expensive just by replacing
parts until it gets fixed.
Run some fuel injector cleaner through a tank of gas. You might also consider doing a general tune-up. Plugs, wires, possibly distibutor cap, etc...

Our beloved Ricebox is only trying to help, but in a case like this, you'll need to ask a Nissan master tech. I happen to know one, and asked him about it. He said he can nail this one on the first try. You have a bad airmass meter. They are quite common. It is located on the pass side of the throttle body, and is attached with two #2 phillips head screws. The only other component you'll need to remove to get at the airmass meter, is the throttle sensor [also two phillips head screws]. Mark and remember the exact position of the throttle sensor before you loosen or remove it. That way you can put it back, without messing up the adjustment. Let us know if we are right on this one. I'm sorry you wasted your money on a fuel pump. Next time, give us a shout here first!
hey , what about a carbed motor. what would cause it to stall out at lights after replacing the plugs, wires , o2 sensor , fuel pump( engine one, not actual tank pump). i ve even had the timing set and reset and im still having problems. someone told me it might be my float in the carb. does anyone have any answers for me.
Isn't the '87 injected too?? It thought they only used carbs until '86

*****As you have the hopeless chockless carb, it can be many things. I cannot nail that one on the first try. Too many variables. Sometimes the Fuel Shut-off solenoid loses it's ground from the ECU. In that case, you can run your own ground to it, to solve the problem. By the way, carbureted Sentras [B11 or B12] don't have an in-tank fuel pump. They only have the mechanical one on the engine.
Well solved the problem..... I just bought a Nissan Frontier King Cab. The Sentra was my wifes car in high school and I took it over as a work car. The Sentra has 168K on her. I think I will call one of those places that well take your car as a tax deduction.
