Is there any connection between temp gauge & fuel gauge?

Ok, i have this 88 sentra and I have rebuilt the engine and done extensive body work, new paint, new cv shafts but the one mystery I can't figure out is that the tempature guage and the fuel guage will not work. One day, however, as i was driving along they both flicked on fo a couple seconds and then off again and they havent worked since. This makes me think there is some electrical problem behind the mystery. Does anyone out there know anything about this? Could it have something to do with the wires behind the radio because when i bought the car the radio didn't come with it and there was a birds nest of wires back there all cut up by the previous owner?

Not likely a wiring issue. If you look up the common problems you'll find out what's wrong. There is a small part called voltage regulator, which goes bad on all Sentras and Pulsars. It sits behing the gauge cluster and is fairly easy to replace and you can get them from a dealer for about $25. Run a search on "voltage regulator" and you will have all the information you need.
