Idle control valve on 1988 Pulsar 1.6L ?

Is there an idle control valve on a 1988 Pulsar with a 1.6L engine? The guys that fixed the engine said it isn't working properly and it is the reason why my car idles rough.

If it has one, how can I test it, and where is it located?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!!

I'll be able to better help you when I get home and check out my factory service manual (you should pick up one of these for yourself, they are very helpful). I do remember having the same problem on my Supra. It was called an idle speed control valve, and it was stuck in a wide open position. I took it off and basically ran an entire bottle of carb/fuel injector cleaner through it. I put it back on and the valve started working properly again.

If you have time before I can post the actual location, you might want to check around the intake manifold and throttle body. It's likely there is a vacuum hose coming from or around the throttle body and connecting to an item on the intake manifold. The part on the intake manifold is likely the idle speed valve.

livelyjay,

Do you know if it is near the EGR valve? I see a valve next to the EGR valve that has vaccum lines running to it.

Thanks for your help and suggestion!

Unfortunately, I had to do laundry, and help a friend with a Honda motor swap last night. I completely forgot and didn't have time to check out the manual. We're getting internet in our new place today, so I should be able to check for you when I get home and post up some answers.

livejay,

Thank you for the update. I really appreciate your help.

The valve I mentioned in my previous post is round and it is located in front of the EGR valve. It has a vaccum line running to the EGR valve, and another one that goes to a metal tube. The metal tube runs along the back side of the valve cover. It then connects to an unkown device on the left hand side of the air cleaner.

Maybe I'll post a picture of it....

Thanks again!

the disc shaped "valve" that sits right above the EGR valve is a bypass valve for the EGR. you'll notice there is a line coming from underneath it that goes down the the EGR, has to do with exhaust backpressure. I am in the same boat with my car. I am planning to tear the idle control solenoid out and clean it up this week.

What is the purpose of this valve? How will the car act if this valve goes bad? Is there a way to test it?

Thanks!

The disc shaped valve by the EGR is a BPT valve (Back Pressure Transducer?) It can be checked by applying pressure to the port on the bottom then check to see if vacum will pass through top ports - should with no pressure, not with pressure. THe idle control valve is on the back of the throtle body - on mine the screws were very hard to get off. I would lean to the idle control valve as being bad unless the diaphram is shot on the BPT.

Minute rice,

Thanks a bunch for posting this information. It helped me locate the ISC valve. I'll pull the valve and test it today. I'll post results later.

Thanks again!!

The ISC checks out OK. The valve opens and closes properly, and the resistance between the terminals checks OK.

I guess I don't understand why I have a funky idle. It idles the worst when the car is put into drive. With the AC on and in park the car idles fine.

Any ideas?
