1988 Pulsar NX 1.6

Does anyone here know the correct engine timing for a 1988 Pulsar NX with a 1.6 engine?

The timing belt was replaced by a Nissan dealer. About a month later the belt tensioner broke. I have a feeling the engine was damaged when this happened (bent valves). In my research of this engine I discovered it is an interfearence design.

The car burns more oil than ever now, idles rough, and is sluggish (poor pickup) since this happened.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Here is what I got off the back of my Pulsar Manual:

Firing order: 1-3-4-2

Idle speed: 800 +/- 100

E16i motor:
Ignition Timing
Check: 7 degrees +/- 5 degrees BTDC
Adjust: 7 degrees BTDC *5

CA16DE motor:
Ignition Timing
Check: 15 degrees +/- 2 degrees BTDC
Adjust: 7 degrees BTDC *5

do a compression test or leakdown test, that should tell you what kind of condition the valves/piston rings/head gasket are in.

Leakdown test showed 150% compression in cylindars 1, 2 and 4. Cylindar 3 was only at 80% compression. The Nissan dealer said the third valve is "burnt". They also said they don't think it was damaged when the timing belt tensioner broke. I told them they were "full of s---". What would cause the valve to burn up? The car was tuned up, and the valves were adjusted the end of last October by the same dealer. Could they have adjusted the valves wrong??

I think the valves were damaged when the timing belt tensioner broke and they aren't admitting it.

What do you guys think? Everything this Nissan dealer touched on this car had a problem. I don't think they have a clue as to what they are doing under the hood of a car.

I think the only way you would be able to tell what's up with #3 is to check what they set the valve clearance to, if they did that wrong it could be letting that valve stay open too long and burn up, I don't know wether or not bending a valve could bend andything else like rocker arms, maybe you can see if the piston top is scratched though the spark plug hole?

I'd say your best bet would be to stay away from the dealer. They charge too much and more often than not their mechanics are bafoons. Last time I went to a dealer with my son we had to explain to them how to fix the car. I never take mine to a dealer unless it's for a recall.

Next thing to do is pull the head and get it fixed. Either do it yourself or ask around and find a mechanic other people recommend.

I'll never go back to that dealer, or any dealer. Everything they did to the car was done wrong. The clearance on #3 is probably incorrect which most likely made it burn up.

I think it's time to send the old Pulsar to the yard. I don't have the time to pull the head myself, and don't want to spend a bundle to have it fixed. It was my wifes first car so she will be sad to see it go. Anyone here need a good parts car? LOL!

The dealer is going to repair the valve, and replace the head gasket at their cost. Can you guys think of anything else I should have them check/replace while the head is off the engine?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Once the valve and tensioner are replaced there really isn't much to check. Consider that the more they fart around with the more they can screw up.

Dealer called me today and said they need to replace the EGR valve as well. Maybe they will do a complete engine rebuild by the time they are finished. LOL!

Picked up the car yesterday. It is running much better. They told me the car needs a throttle control vavle. Didn't know this old vintage car had one. You guys have any idea where it is located? Is it near the EGR valve? I'll get one and put it on myself. It does idle funny at times, especially when cold.
