I've got an 87 Pulsar NX with a E16i engine and I'm presuming from what I've been able to find, an RS5F31A 5 speed standard transmission. I can't find the model on the transmission. I looked on the clutch arm but the sticker is worn off. Here's my problem: It's popping out of 5th gear when it's cold. I'm assuming it's only going to get worse as time goes on. I'm considering getting a used transmission to replace it from a junk yard. I went on the AllData database at the local library and was able to find several different gear ratios and final gear ratios listed for the same transmission on different model/year nissans. I want to change the gear/final gear ratios to increase my fuel economy. Right now I'm running 3500 rpm's at 65 mph.
Two questions:
1. How do I determine what gear ratio transmission I have now
2. How do I go about finding the same model transmission with a more economical gear ratio (if one exists) or is it possible to get after market parts to alter the ratios
as for the transmission, welcome to the world of 5th gear pop-out... happens to a lot of cars.... do a search on it and you might be able to get some of your questions answered.
If you run a search, there is a thread with common problems and fixes which discusses how to fix the pop-out problem. It is, however, not for the faint at heart and requires pulling off the side of the tranny.
I agree that the Pulsar does have a very short/small gear ratio, and I have also thought about doing a tranny swap. Right now I don't want to because I'm going to autocross it, so the smaller ratio will actually help me stay in the small powerband.
You would be safe going with a Sentra tranny from 87 or 88 since they have the exact same engine and I'm guessing that any E-series engine will have a compatible tranny.

I did some searching before I posted and did find considerable information on the 5th gear problem and possible fixes. I figure I'll replace the transmission but need/want to know how to determine one 5 speed from another if the same transmission was produced with different gear ratios.
More likely than not, the Sentra tranny will be the same as the Pulsar tranny, with a higher gear ratio since it is a family sedan model. The Pulsar was the sporty version, thus the shorter gear ratio.
