85 Sentra Transaxle

I have a 85 Sentra and I know the transmission is bad and I need to replace it. With the engine running, it makes a grinding noise, even in neutral. If you push the clutch in, it stops, so I guess it's time to replace the transaxle.

My question is: does the engine have to come out to get the transaxle out? If not, are there any secrets I need to know before I start that will make this job easier.

Thanks for your help
Mike

you don't have to pull the engine to get the tranny out.

The best way to do it is to first take off the front wheels and axle nuts. Then disconnect the control arms so the hub assembly is free to move and you can release the axles. Then, pry the axles out of the transaxle (gently) and set aside. Next, you'll want to disconnect the starter from the battery and remove it from the transmission. It should be just a matter of unbolting and dropping the transmission from the two mounts and the engine. It would be wise to have an engine hoist around the motor and a couple jackstands supporting the transmission while this is going on...and obviously you'll need the front of the car in the air to drop the transmission out from the bottom. Some EGR equipment may have to be removed to get to the bellhousing bolts.
