i need some info on doing some engine mods to my car.
basicly just what can i do to it what will it cost and how much hp can i expect to be able to add. im on a tight budget so i have no problem fabricating my own stuff.
from what i have read it sounds like i can put a bigger carb on it but i dont know how to go about doing it or what carb i can put on. also can i do anything to the intake like add a CAI? from my reading it wasnt very clear weather this is possible on my engine.
and the exhaust system, can i do any thing with that?
is there anything else i can do to get some extra hp like new plugs or something?

well, sounds like you've read and searched...and some things aren't clear so i'll say what i can.
CAI is something you would have to make yourself, but its possible.
Exhaust, best thing is to just goa little bigger and freer flowing muffler. If you can get your hands on a pacesetter header then that helps alot too but they aren't made anymore and hard to find
Bigger carb, i dunno, but others do. if anything have an open element air filter for intake, make sure the car is tuned up good, run good plugs like NGK or expensive bosch. umm...at the moment i can't think of much.
and if you want to be faster, dont always think engine, try some weight reduction, and also use good quality lubricants cause they'll help keep any robbing of power.

thanks alot for the suggestions. i think i know what direction im gona go with my mods at the moment. i was at the parts store and i was looking at some of those bosch plugs and they look like a good chioce (exept i have no money). is there anyone on this forum i can talk to about building a CAI, carbs and intake stuff? also what can i take off to reduce my weight?

if you dont have alot of money just stick with NGK they're very good. weight reduction...the best is take out your back seat, but if you ever use it dont worry about it. if you are just around town you can leave your spare tire out. whatever interior parts/panel you dont need you can leave out. if you ever change wheels get lightweight wheels. umm, i can't really think of a whole lot more. i know some people cut out the hood supports and use hood pins, thats probably 20lbs, same with the trunk, but thats only if you are very serious about it and i wouldnt' worry tomuch about weight to that much extent.

For weight reduction, I took out all panneling, carpet, seats and belts (replaced driver's with a konig seat), spare tire, emissions equipment, stereo system, and hood and trunk latches. I left the bracing on the hood and trunk cuz it was a PITA to take off...i need to get my hands on a cutting wheel. This is obviously a full race setup, though. If you can't find a Pacesetter header, get an S&S header. It's the same 4-1 design but only $181 and they're still in production. You can order online. The carb options are a Nissan Z24 carb or a weber 32/34 DGVE downdraft 2bbl...IIRC....As far as exhuast goes, dont go with anything larger than 2.5" as it will not provide enough backpressure and you'll lose too much bottom end. Those are the E-series basics. If you wanna tear down the motor, there is much more power to be gained.

so minute, you cut off aiv and stuff, what did you do with vacuum lines just plug them? and did you notice any gas mileage difference?

the z24 / webber 32/34 carb upgrade is a good thing, I've got a webber sitting waiting for the datsun to be drivable. I have a CAI that i made and it probably isn't hurting anything. A stronger spark coil wouldn't hurt. I have some 8 mm plug wires also.
Are you trying to keep this car street legal? if no, then it's really hard.
If not, then you might want to try one of those hot-rod spark boxes. I have a test pipe, and I can't tell if there is any performance benefit, but it keeps from having the cat catch on fire from running too rich. A header would help. replacing the exhaust pipe with 2" helps and your car will still be street legal.
Anyone else feel that the stock radiator isn't really enough? I have the stock shape but a higher density core/180 degreee t'stat and it runs about 190 degrees with the fan forced on when i'm on it. Temperature will go up a bit with the ambient temperature, but rarely up to 212.

what does this have to do with more power? Sentras have weak dampers and when you accellerate alot of the force goes into pushing the a$$ of the car down. just fixing that makes the car a bit faster from a stop.
I also have no interior, and well... i probably took 75 lbs out tops, and added more weight back in with tools and stuff. so if you took all the interior out you'd get like 3HP.
you could make an E16 have more power but not cheaply ( if you spent $7,000 you could have what, 150 HP ). I hear they can be real reliable tho. ( i have yet to see this )
The sentra can be a fun car, when you can put all 70 HP to the ground it really gets going.
I redid all the vacuum stuff to clean things up a bit( here's a couple of diagrams for before and after http://community.webshots.com/album/94002342FxEwML ), I was gonna move the EGR solenoid to the driver's side of the engine but I didn't feel like messing with the wiring. I watched my mileage for a month or so after the job and didn't notice any decrease, If I remember correctly there was actually a slight increase, but I really don't remember because I did that in the early fall in '02. I've had a recent drop in my mileage over the last month or so, I still haven't figured it out, the o2 sensor looks ok, but I know I'm really starting to burn oil now, so that's not helping matters at all.

cool thanks, i think i'll do that if it doesn't hurt gas mileage then i wont worry about it, if it helps i'll be ecstatic cause i'm tyring to push as much as i can in mileage, i'm at 30city 35 highway

vacuum gauge will help with economy too, but it'll probably cost more for the gauge than you will save.
I'm back down to my all time low of 22 with about 1/4 highway, the rest city, I'm gonna do a little tune-up this weekend and try to ease off the gas a little and see if that helps. I gotta warn ya Gsolo, it's hard to stay off the gas with open intake and exhaust, or maybe it's just me...

oh trust me, i know how hard it is...i drive my chevy half the time and catch myself flooring the pulsar trying to get the same ass-o-meter feel...but nah, i'm usually good about keeping it down, dont need vacuum gauge to watch while driving. but wouldnt' mind having one to watch what my engine does, you can tell when you start having valve problems or manifold leaks etc from vacuum

what is better an open element air filter or a CAI?
how did you make it sleeper? does enyone know were that thread for step-by-step fabrication of an open element air filter is?
