Crashed :(

i guess it's a win-lose deal. Today i was driving through a residential area of town going about 40kph when a guy in an explorer who was turning left didn't see me and pulled out right in front of me. The left front of my car is all bashed in, the headlight doesnt work properly and the hood doesn't fit shut anymore, the fender is bent and the side-signal light is smashed, and the radiator brace is bent.

Good thing is, he knew right away it was his fault and since insurance costs have skyrocketed here, we decided to not go through insurance. The estimate i got was $1400cdn, so if he pays me that i'll be happy cause that's more than the car is worth anyway.

Bad thing is, I can't really drive anymore. the car decided to barely go over 50kph today, runs like crap... oh well.

he wants to call me back tomorrow after he talks to his parents about it. but, this kinda foils my ca18det plans for the time being...

I would talk to your insurance agent and I would advise he do the same before making any payments. Chances are his insurance is going to rise anyway after they realize an accident has occurred, unless of course a police report isn't filed by either party. If that is the case and he's willing to pay out the amount in damages or from what it sounds thus far, vehicle replacement, then let him.

The reason for my prior warning, on his part, is that if the insurance company gets word of the accident, his rates will rise so anyway it would have been just as well he went through the insurance company to begin with. I'm speaking from an example, an accident my brother had over 5 years ago, and he agreed to pay out $1400 himself. Little did he realize, the person he hit filed a police report, which is required by law, so his rates increased regardless of what happened, just because he's now considered a high risk driver. If he had his time back he would have accepted the rate increase and let the insurance pay it out. That way the car I'm driving now would have been fixed properly with nothing out of his own pocket since he was 4th driver on the vehicle at the time.

The same can be said for you. I wouldn't be surprised if your insurance rates go up because of this accident as you will be classified as high risk also, at fault or not.

Hope it all works out.

Hope you don't get screwed over. Don't know how everything works up north but down here if you don't use insurance it would be impossible to make someone pay without a police report to prove the accident occured.

If you get the money maybe you can upgrade to a Pulsar with a CA18DE.

$50 for a rolling shell......If it wasn't all the way up there I'd already be on the road to go get it.

At some point reality has to sink in. Doing an engine swap isn't a weekend job and it's not cheap. This is why my swap is in storage. Just not in the cards right now. Maybe you should think about just getting yourself a reliable little car until you're out of school and in a better financial situation.

my swap will wait till after school to it seems. I might work on the CA during school but it wont go in till after i'm sure. actually i'm having second thoughts about even doing it...starting to feel like i'm neglecting my raw domestic instincts (sorry guys but V8s get me going alot more) i've been driving my chevy all week cause the pulsar wont start (dunno why) so yeah, the old feelings are coming back to me, then again so is the realization that i need gas and its very very expensive.

Since the police are informed, this accident will show up on his insurance record. So, for the other guy's sake you should advise him to check with his insurance agent before shelling out cash from his own pocket, with regard to how his rates will be in the future because of this, even if he is on his parents policy now or for the next several years.

It would be better for him, financially, in both the short and long term to let the insurance company pay for repairs and compensation on both sides, IMO.

by far. haha, unless he doesn't have insurance. but then spelch's insurance would definately go up cause he's high risk at attracting underinsured drivers. i swear they're everywhere and some ppl are magnets to em.

this is why i have my doubts.. My plan for the time being is to bus it and see if i cant get this thing running better. I don't even have time off till monday to look at it, but hopefully it's something simple like a vacuum line or bad plugs.

as far as insurance goes, the way it's supposed to work here is your insurance only goes up if you claim something. my boss crashed twice into someone else and he just gave them cash, it never showed up on his or their records, even though he filed police reports both times. The guy that hit me is about 20 so we're trying to cut a deal, because as gsolo said, my insurance might go up just because i was simply involved, which is silly. plus all the bureaucracy... we just kinda dont want them involved. I'm not sure if it works differently south of the border, but basically if we don't tell the insurance companies, they don't find out. The police give us a collision report form, which is what we forward to the insurance company if we decide to go through them.

down here, usually when you file a collision police report you put your insurance info on it then police write down their collision investigation/analysis info if any then send it to insurance.....usually though. sometimes its just like blah insurance doesn't find out

yeah, i went there today and they gave me the accident report sheet, and said that I need to forward it to my insurance if i choose to do so.

umm as far as my car goes, i pulled the plugs tonight and, well.. it doesnt seem good... the plugs from cyl 3 and cyl 4 are both SOAKED with oil.. i have no idea what that means but it doesnt seem like something easy to fix.. anyone know?

^Yeah might be valve seals giving up on you.

I would just look for a new mule to run around in if i were you. take the bus for a few weeks and find a nice runner. I always buy Nissans, but I'm told that's a bit weird. I suppose there's other cars out there if you look hard enough.
