Ok guys, I currently own a 97 sentra but have had some issues lately with the charging system and have been considering getting something different. This morning I test drove an 87 pulsar nx. It's twin cam, and has 115,000 miles on it and its a manual. The t-tops leak and the red paint is fading. It drives great. Very smooth ride, shifts great, and handles really well. The car is stock, but I've noticed some extra wireing done under the dash above the pedals-not sure what it is(looks like a repair done by a cheap repair shop). The guy at the lot has the price at $1,000. Need some opinions on this. If it were a b14 I'd have no problem making this decision but I am not too familar with this generation. Let me know what you guys think.

the engine you have should be the ca16de, which is a great little engine. I think pretty much all the ttops on those cars leak. What I would look for when buying is:
check under the spare and make sure it isn't rusty; this is a good indication of whether the body will start rusting or not
check all the rubber boots and make sure they aren't torn, and the suspension looks ok
and give it a good drive and make sure you don't see any blue-white smoke, which indicates burning oil
umm as far as $1000 goes, I guess it depends on how common those cars are around where you live. I live in a city of 50,000 and there are about 6 of these cars in town that i've seen, so i bought mine for 1200cdn but it needed work and still does.
if they're asking $1000, you could probably whittle them down a bit. Just make sure you give everything a thorough test because parts are very expensive for this engine
If i were you, i'd go for it

I'm gonna go back with my best friend today and check it out some more. I'm gonna bring my digital camera with me and take some shots of that wiring that don't make sense to me and maybe you guys might have an idea what it's all about. I hoping everything checks out cause give it a good paint job and this car would look sweet as you know what compared to my sentra. Besides I've always wanted a convertable or t-tops. I'll let ya's know what I find. I'm gonna try and talk him down on the price. Wish me luck

that sounds good if everything's ok on it, and t-tops leaking is a pretty common problem. If you find a missing part or something, I've got a red '88 SE out here that I need to sell some parts off of
Given the type of car it is, I'd say go for it. The leak can be fixed... and after driving my auto with the smaller engine, I still find this car fun and cost-effective.
The twin cam should provide you with good power for the weight of the car (2300-2400lbs), the trunk gives good storage room, these cars are not at all common so you'd be driving something that might get extra attention...
I bought mine for $1,500CDN in great condition (128,000 KM), only needed a wheel allignment.
Just remember to milk the sore spots when negotiating a lower price.
its a great litle car, can 1000 is a fair price, i paid 500 for mine, needed a paint job, and a new engine, i have changed everything on this car(including engine) all for aftermarket/performance parts including ca18det, i'm at about the 5000$ canadian with the car completed along with new rims, rubber, ca18det, engine upgrades, suspension, brakes, still waiting for the new paint job though, its a great litle car, very fun to drive, you'll love it if you buy it, but i would suggest the engine swap, its cheap and will make you car very fast, cheq some pics of my project
things to look out for, rust, these car seam to rust real bad, every where, cheq your strut towers , under the spare tire, your brake and fuil lines, cheq for soft spots in the rocker panels(from bondo jobs) , but i must warn you, if you do keep the ca16de, with high milage like that, i would say beware of parts, they are $$$$$$ and hard to find, good luck and i hope this helps with your decision
I got a red '87 Pulsar as well: 120K, swapped auto for 5-speed, near-perfect body and slightly fading paint, great interior...for free! It has the E16i in it, but it'll get replaced soon. Just put new front struts and balljoints in, getting ready to put the rear discs in it next month after I finish the new engine.
Just let the salesguy think that the CA16i version is the common version; That oughtta save you a few $$$$. Other'n that, sounds like a good one. Best to ya!
