I have a 87 Pulsar and last night i was making a left turn and my shifter bogged back two times and then it wouldnt go into gear. It goes into second, and fourth, but those gears dont grab. If i shift it in second or forth I can pull the shifter back all the way and I can feel it lift the motor. I have no idea what the problem is. Also, neutral acts as a drive gear. pls help.
it stays in gear if it is in neutral, if it is in second or fourth it doesnt cut off. I cant go into first, third or reverse
I'd go underneath and look at if the shifter support rod came unhooked from the rear engine mount. I'd reckon it did. There's two rods from the shifter assembly: One is the actual selector rod that hooks to the transaxle, and the other is a rod which connects to the transaxle mount which gives the shifter assembly its rigidity. Best to do is pull your shift boot off and observe what happens when you shift the lever through the gears. If your mechanism moves at all, other than normally, There's your problem. Or, you mah have also blown your shifter bushing...

honestly to me it sounds like a very very very tired transmission. Mine was almost like that, although i'm kinda lost on the thing of feeling it lift the engine?

I know the transmission is messed up.. my fith gear was gone when I bought the car.. but I was thinking maybe one of the bushings is tore up or maybe I bent the hell out of the shift linkage. I hope all I need is a new clutch and throw out bearing.
...I was thinking maybe one of the bushings is tore up or maybe I bent the hell out of the shift linkage.
I just opened up an RS5F31A an hour ago; Internally, it seems impossible to bend the bellcranks and the rod between them and the outside linkage. Also, the shift forks are cast aluminum, suggesting they'd break before they bent. I can't picture what it might be, but you might wanna just drop another tranny in 'er. Save the old one, I wanna do an autopsy. Part o' th' learning process, y'know...
I found why mine wouldn't stay in 5th: 5th gear dogs mostly worn, baulk ring wearing out, synchro sleeve dog tips worn. It appears I can flop the synchro over and use it again, but the gear and baulk ring are definitely toast.

you have to replace all related 5th gear items.
And I believe your tranny is toast, you should try to find a good one to put in there.

Dude...but why??? I mean...if I was talking about a 1/2 or 3/4 synchro sleeve, I can understand that, because both sides of the synchro are used; But the 5th synchro...the other side never gets used. It's still perfect. I'm just gonna recycle it, take my chances...

i'm saying this out of others experiences that it's better to replace the gear synchro fork all that stuff now, otherwise you'll just have to open it up again in a few months if that.

I appreciate the input, but I'm just gonna run with my gut. I respect your tech expertise, because I'm not schooled in it as you are; But, I've got 22 years of 'pragmata' behind me which knows how to balance perfection with available cash. Consider this a 'test-bed'; You won't have to pay for this lesson if it goes tits-up. Besides, I got other trannies and I can swap one in 1-1/2 hours. I'll keep ya posted...

thats cool. i wasn't trying to say you're wrong or have a bad idea, just giving my input. Besides, doing that is a good way to learn.
And never think you can swap the tranny in just 1.5hours trust me, when you say that you jinx it and run into a whole mess of problems....ie: stubborn ball joints, starters that don't fit, etc.
