Today as we jumped in my girl's car, I started it up as usual, and it shut off on my and wouldn't start anymore. I figured the carb was flooded, although I hadn't even given it any gas. Gave it 10 minutes, still wouldn't start. 35 minutes later, after a couple of cranks and some taps of the gas, she started up.
It has never done this before. Any idea on what the problem could be? I'm really thinking it's the damn carb. I'm already pointing fingers at the damn carb for the really bad fuel mileage the car is getting. Is it time for a new carb, or rebuild? Help me out guys, otherwise I have to play taxi!! ::
What, if anything, have you done to it so far? I'd recommend checking the fuel level in the float bowl. There's a site glass on the passenger side of the carb. Clean it up and make sure it's up to the middle of the glass at idle. Just to make sure, she does have an '87 or earlier with E16S.

As far as the fuel consuption problem, I've replaced spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter, and am waiting on my next paycheck to replace the O2 sensor. As far as the carb, I've done nothing to it except mess with the Idle mixtue screw, which probably screwed up the carb even more. Where do I go from here?
I'll go ahead and check the float bowl tomorrow. It's just weird that this happen out of nowhere. Asides from the gas consumption, the car has been running fine.
stick to your nova haha, ok anyhow seriously...could be carb. here's the thing though...when it does that it could be flooded, all you do is floor the gas pedal while cranking the key. It makes the gas want to flow through and the idle circuit and power circuits are off somewhat. Once it starts in a puff of smoke just gently let off the gas and let it smooth out. If its not cause its flooded it could be not enough gas. And there is a whole list of causes for that but first check is the window.

Hey now, hey now! I love my Nissans just as much as I love my Nova! There's been Nissans in my family since I was born!
But seriously, I'm thinking it's a fuel probelm. Cause when I started the car, I barely tapped the gas pedal. Then after trying to crank it again, I'm sure I probably ended up flooding it. I have yet to check the float window, since I'm coming down with the damn flu. But I'm gonna check it out this weekend for sure. I really need some help...

Ok guys, gotta bring this topic back to life because her damn car is doing this again. She just got stranded last night for a good hour. She got to the car and didn't want to start all of a sudden, as if it's not getting enough fuel. After sitting there for about 45 minutes, she cranked it with the gas to the floor, and started right up.
What the hell can be the cause of this!! It's bad enough the car is wasting gas like crazy, let alone doing this now! Help me...
Well, this kind of thing is pretty tough to diagnose over the web. But if you'd narrowed it down to a fuel flow problem start breaking it down.
- Fuel tank pick-up screen. Remove sending unit from tank and inspect/clean screen
- Fuel lines
- Fuel filter (already changed)
- Fuel pump. Easy to check. Remove fuel line from carb, place end of line in a container and crank engine. Fuel should pump out pretty good.
- Seat screen. Small filter screen under the seat in the carb prone to becoming clogged. Need to remove the top of the carb, unscrew the seat and remove/clean the screen.
Have you checked the fuel level in the carb chamber?

my idea is that it flooded itself. might be time for a carb rebuild
