My friend's 88 Sentra died without warning while idling in traffic and wouldn't start. I checked fuel pressure--it's fine. The electrical system is fine. However, I pulled the oil filler cap while my friend cranked the engine, and, though the accessory belts were turning, I could see that the rocker arms weren't doing squat. So, it appears that the timing belt is broken.
The car is currently stranded in the parking lot of a Mexican restuarant, and there's no money to tow it (my friend is way broke). So, we're going to change the timing belt in the parking lot tomorrow afternoon. What I need to know is, are there any tricks or special tools I need to do this job? I've changed a timing belt before, but not on this engine. Is it hard to get the block to TDC? What about the valvetrain?
Also, and probably most importantly, is the E16 an interference engine? If it is, there's no point in changing the belt, since the head is probably toast. If it's not an interference engine, everything should be cool? Just get the two sprockets to TDC and put the belt on. Right?
Thanks for any input!
i hate ot tell u this but it is and interference engine..... have fun fixing that. if ur freind can scrap up about 200 bucks i bet he could get the better turbo head. and also heres another option. in about 2 months maybe less ill be swaping my e16 out for the turbo e15 so i coudl sell him the head off of that. but u knwo u gotta wait a while. wish best of luck though......

Thanks for the offer, but the Sentra has to be fixed ASAP. Here's why: my friend's wife's car, a 95 Escort is sitting in my driveway with a busted bottom end. So, they have zero cars right now.
OK, since the timing belt broke while the engine was at idle, is it any less likely to have bent some valves? We did crank it several times afterward, obviously, but it wasn't making any unusual noises. I guess I'll try to turn the cam sprocket by hand tomorrow to see if the valves are OK.
Oh, yeah, this is the carbed E16, if that makes any difference.
if you are very very very very very very very etc lucky then you wont have bent valves. and it wont run very well on bent valves.

True, but since the belt broke at 800rpm, or whatever idle is on that engine, I'm hoping that the pistons would be moving slowly enough to just move the valves back up rather than hit them so fast and hard that they bend rather than move.
That's what I'm hoping anyway. Well, there's a million B12's around here, so if a valve is bent, I'll try to get a junked head and install that.

Well, if the TBI head and the carbed head are the same, I'd be interested--I'd much rather have a head that is known to be good rather than a junkyard mystery head.
This is a complete head right? Cam, valves, rocker arms, springs, etc?
I'll send you a PM tomorrow night if I need the head.

Awesome. Can you confirm that the TBI head and the carb head are the same? Is the only difference in what's attached to the inlet of the intake manifold?
