Angry 87miles on one tank of gas???

whats up everybody!! It been a long time since I hit you all wih an update on my "project" B12. Last episode I was in dyer need of some mount and transmission advice. Thanks to all for the help!!! Cuz it paid off!! I had to yank the motor out to get to the mounting screws tha just so happened to break off flush with th block(ouch!!). I dropped the trans and swapped out the bellhousing with one that wasnt shot!! Put it all back together and every thing ran smooth. Now I know you are probably wonderin' well whats the problem? ....Right?
Well here we go.....

I notice a few things.

1. It burns too rich!!! There was black soot all over the rear of the car just above the tail pipe.

2. After adjusting the shift cable for the trans it still only shifts twice!! I installed a tach and the rpm's shoot to 4000 at 75 mph!!! Is that normal? or Is there an overdrive?

and last but not least 3 I filled up and drove to JAckson (EXACTLY 87 miles from home) I barely made it !!!!!! 87 miles on 1 tank of gas???Whats wrong??I know its gettin too much gas how do I correct this problem? I got no vacume leaks
any advice will help...

Sincerly,

fuel filter, maybe.... I hear tell that they can be the cause of bad gas mileage, however not necessarily as extreme as yours seems to be. something's awry, though... i was getting better mileage than that when i only had 3 cylinders firing!

bad o2 sensors kill gas milage too but not that much!! Jeez man, if you had a full tank, then you're missing more than 200 miles!
And 4k at 75 sounds about right for a 4-speed standard, i would think an auto would have lower rpms if you're not on the gas too much.

4k at 75 sounds about right. My 5speed would run at about 3800 at 75.

About the milage I suggest checking the following, it's probably a combination of a couple of problems: O2 sensor, cap, rotor, wires, plugs, air filter, fuel filter, EGR vavle, and timing. Also try running some fuel system cleaner through the system.

Well, before the trip I replaced the cap, wires, and plugs, but not the fuel filter or rotor button.... I did that after I got back. It helped some, but not much....5 gallons took me 50 miles.Im going to recheck my timing and replace the o2 sensor and see if it helps....

Do you have a leak in your gas tank or fuel lines?

What engine is this? One strong possibility for oil contamination is a ruptured fuel pressure regulator, allowing fuel to flow into the intake and then leak past the rings.

im having about the same problem right now. im getting about 200 miles per tank nowhere near as bad as you, but still far from the 280-320 miles per tank i used to get. ive checked the codes and got a no malfunctions detected, so the problems gotta be mechanical. my next step is to replace the fuel pressure regulator since the car runs great, but just uses more gas. do you have a hard time starting the car if you dont warm it up completely? mine keeps fouling the plug from being saturated from gas.
btw: so far ive replaced the plugs, wires, cap/rotor, and o2 sensor. i figure my next step is the fpr. hope this helps a bit.

edit: ive also replaced all of my vaccuum (damn thats a crappy word to spell) hoses.

My girl's 87 is having the same exact problem, I'm talking 100 miles max, on a full tank of gas. I really think it's a carb problem, because it wasn't this bad till I accidentaly messed with the screw right behind the carb, the idle mixture screw, I believe. Tried messing with it this weekend, and only made the thing suck up more gas. Any tips on how to adjust this thing? Also gonna try changing the O2 sensor. Help me out here, cause it's hurting me too... I also put gas in this damn car!!

Gas in the oil?? That sounds like the fuel pump diaphram is leaking...

My B11 gets awful milage if I am really cooking... On a recent road rally I had to stop on the stage and get more gas because we were doing a bunch of long hill climbs. (i also discovered later a fuel leak caused by plastic fuel system parts...) But I caught back up with the pack quickly... Thing screams up hill

well my suggestion would be check pcv cause that could do it if the check-valve isn't working right. also if you have mechanical fuel pump carefully check if its leaking or not. reason i say carefully, i dunno about this engine but on some it doesn't take much to lose the shaft that operates the pump
