Exclamation car dying again!!EGR bad?.... responsible for problems?

While idling I can push up the EGR valve all the way without killing the engine... all that happens is a quick increase in RPM's.... And once again... my car is running like shit..... sputtering/stumbling like hell... I just had a carburator rebuild and valve job not even 200 miles ago and haven't driven tough (except for a very large hill climb one night... My dist. cap and rotor are also new, along with wires and plugs.... Also recently replaced all vaccuum hoses (yes, they're all in their right spots).... I can't figure it out, I have no power, car falls on it's face with even moderately heavy acceleration, and a very strong exhaust/coolant smell... help! I thought owning vintage Volkswagens was trying on my patience, at least with vw's I could fix any problem with bailing wire and duct tape.... hehe....

Well, a carb rebuild doesn't always fix the problem. Sometimes you have to get a replacement. Fuel filter?

The scariest part is the strong exhaust/coolant smell. May be a leaking head gasket, I know you just had it redone but you should run a compression test.

Well... when I just drove back to my house from a buddies (about 2 blocks)... my car poured smoke out the tail end while accelerating... typical POS-car-smokin-down-the-road color, kinda bluish white.... Gonna take it in to the shop tomorrow and have 'em look at it again... *sigh*.....

oh yeah... the fuel filter, lines, and pump are all fine also... just checked 'em....the only thing that seems out of whack (aside from the whole damn car ) is the EGR valve... and maybe the timing belt.... dunno..... *shrugs and opens yet another beer*

Put your beer away because when you open the EGR the engine is supposed to die or close to it when you manually open the EGR at idle on a warm engine. Now I don't know if that's relevant to your problem but your EGR or the components are not operative.

Bluish WHITE SMOKE!!! Better check your oil and make sure itsnot got the dreaded milk. Or even just check under the cap. Sounds like a head gasket.
My 87 was doing the same thing, without the smoke, and I ended up fixing it with premium gas.
