Has anyone ever seen a ca18det with a dry sump oil system? I am thinking about trying to do something like this to my ca18det when i'm done with the rebuild because i've read on many sites that there are several advantages to this system.
This dry sump oil system is supposed to free up some high power by reducing "windage"(when the crank counterweights dip into the oil in the oil pan and put a drag on the engine). The excess oil will be stored in an external(in relation to the engine) tank so there isn't very much oil in the oil pan to slosh around and hit moving objects. The downside to having the oil in an external tank is you have to have another oil pump for tank as well as your sump pump so you will have a little bit of extra weight and a little less space wherever you put the tank. But i plan on trying to make a system that is totally electric so i can have oil pressure before i even start the engine. I also want an electric water pump setup so i can have the water still flowing through the block and radiator a couple of minutes after the engine is shut off. The water pump idea is just a thought and i'm not sure how practical it would be(I just don't like the idea of the engine sitting there and baking after you turn it off).

I like the electric water pump idea, the block does superheat after a shutoff. The dry sump idea.?.?. Interesting theory. Sounds like something a dragster engine would have for that liiiiitle bit exta. Is that a feature that was ever put into a production auto?

A number of the high end sportscars have used systems like that. I think the current 911 does, probably the Lambo's and Ferrari's also. The new Ford GT will also, IIRC.

Well, it's probbably gonna be a 2/3rds street, 1/3rd strip or track car. So this car is gonna get the living crap beat out of it, and i want to try to make it last as long as possible and not have to "baby" it.

Thats what I love about these old cars. Run the piss out of it, spin cookies in reverse, scratch the paint, puke on the doors. Who cares? Not like a 35K$ sport ute that you worry about every rock ding.

Yeah, i got sideways in my moms suburban yes-turd-ay and i thought that thing was gonna flip. I think i'll stick to the "artificial drifting" in my sentra, or just borrow my brother's Z!
I haven't decided what kind of performance stuff to do to his car yet, but the v8 swap sounds tempting! But his car will have to wait until I'm done with my ca18det project.
