Got my ride back

Yes finally, it's in my posession. What a run-around. But it was worth it for all the free shit the mech. had to throw in.
Now I'm breaking it in slowly, and go back next week so they can retorque the head, and change the oil.
Few problems;
1) Still leaking coolant, out of the hard pipe out back. Need to have it welded.
2) Lifter is still clicking. Apparently you can't get lifters down here.
3) At the last minute they replaced the thermostat. (only told them like 12 times to replace it so that one is my bad) Now the temp. gauge never gets over half. most of the time it sits there like 1/4-1/3 of the way up. Is this gonna fuck up my break-in?
Good news;
1) idles much better.
2) Got a crazy thick-ass brand new radiator free. My mech. says it's a "special' one. Only like 1 in 20-30 to come off the line had this one. Any ideas which?
3) New dog-bone mounts. So stable, no stick wobble at all. Can't wait to launch it.
4)throw out bearing fixed. Actually the box was running about a quart low. TOB was fine. WTF?

OK thats probably too much. Next it's fluids (all around) and pads, and off to the track.
They guy mentioned that a '80's skyline sedan, which I think is equivalent to a box-shaped Maxima (up to 85 or so ??) Has brakes that will swap onto B12. Like to know about this in the near future.
Peace B

Well logged 250k so far. Coolant leak seems to have cured itself. ?!? CLicking lifter cures itself, after it pumps up. I think it may be a bit clogged, and thus not pump up as fast as the others.

Temp. gauge got up to half way in traffic, and the fan kicked right on and killed the heat. The needle still lurks really low when cruising on the highway. Rather when I go from 80 to 100 back to 80 etc... What up wit dat?

Re: Got my ride back

good to hear you got your car back in running order.
perhaps the thermostat is a low temp one, but the temp/fuel gauges in the B12 aren't really well known for their accuracy ethier so it could just be the gauge. But if the engine gets cooled down to the point that you start to loose power or drivability, then it's definitely not the gauge. I believe that different water to coolant ratios affect the efficiency of the radiator also, but i'm not exactly sure. Maybe someone else knows.

And that would be pretty awesome to have some skyline brakes on a B12!
INSANE!!!!!!!!
I'de love to here more about that!

If it's hot enough down there, snatch out the thermostat and enjoy the cool running car. The radiator you're referring is possibly a variant of the double core radiators found in the automatic pulsars with twin cam motors (It's what I use).

Dude, the skyline brand down here is equivalent to an old-ass Max. Not the high performance vehicles u might be thinking of. They do however stop a car that's possibly some 700 pounds heavier or more, so I guess it's kinda insane. Will find out more when I bring it in for 500km service

Yeah I think it is that radiator, it looks rather massive. U really think I can remove the thermostat? A freind said to do this awhile back, but he drives a '64 Land Rover, so I kinda just brushed that idea aside. The car seems to run really cool anyway. The Fan only kicks on in heavy traffic after like 20min. and the rest of the time is disconcertingly low toward the bottom. At least it's not riding on the other end anymore.

Next I need to do some basic suspension tuning. I just realized I don't have a rear sway bar, at least I don't see it. What a gyp. Will post issues in a few days. Time to do some spare-yard hopping. Any input would help, thanks guys. b

Man, you gotta have a sway bar on the rear! Even the boot leg/ cheapie sentras of 1987 and their crappy carburetors got 'em. I'm 1000% sure you got one, but they don't look like the B13's (B12's actually thicker) and actually cover more of the cars rear circumference. Check it out good and make sure because if not, you got played for a sway bar.

sorry, man old max=skyline=datsun 810... all RWD, no dice on the brakes offa that... but brakes off of a later FWD max, mayhaps... hmmm... in any case, there are a lot of brake conversions for a B12, you might want to do a search for them...

Nope it's a front wheel version. The box-shaped one with an old vg series engine in it. It's the one before the J30 chassis, and after the RWD ones you mentioned (85-89 I think). These are ubiquitous down here, and I hope to have some brakes from one, one day...

I can't see the sway bar hanging down in the rear, just those two arms going to the knuckle. I'll check again later if I have time.

Well, you'll have to crawl under there. The swaybar goes all the way across from one side to the other in a big kinda half rectangle shape and has 2 brackets holding it up in the middle as well as both ends.
