E16...gas guzzler???

I got this 87 Sentra for my girl cause it's supposed to be a reliable and super economic car (and has only 75000 original miles!), but this thing has been wasting more gas than my SE-R, which has also been wasting gas! She only drives around town, within a 10 mile radius at the most, and she's fililng up almost every week! I'm not exactly sure how many miles per gallon she's getting, cause the trip odometer isn't working correctly, but it's wasting some serious gas.

The car had a tune-up before we got it. Only thing I haven't replaced is Spark Plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Should I try changing the O2 sensor as well?

I have a large hunch that it has to do with the carb needing adjustment, since I know I threw it off somewhat while attempting to adjust the idle. I messed with a screw behind the carb, which I have no idea what it is.

Please help me out with some advice on tuning this thing and getting it this damn motor to get at least 20MPG!!!!

Thanks,
Gino

Well, plugs, wires, cap, and rotor are usually replaced in a "tune up". They are really important in drivability and would probably effect the milage alot. I'm not sure if the carb motors even have an O2 sensor.

the e16s has a heated oxygen sensor, i heard they co$t like ~$60
and on an e16i a bad one can make your ecu think that it is running lean all the time and keep trying to add more fuel to the mixture and i think the e16s would be setup similar to that. before i replaced the O2 sensor on my E16i i was getting ~22 mpg
and now i get ~30 mpg i've heard of people getting 40-45 on the highway! I fill up once a week also but it only has a 13 Gal. tank.

Well, I'm not sure if it has a E16s or E16I, but either way, from what you describe, it seems like a good idea to change that O2 sensor. Thanks, Minute.

If you messed with the screw on the back of the carb...kinda burried inside the base, it's the idle mixture scew. Messing with it can make the car idle rich or lean or even just right...depends.

You're right, Myetball. It was the idle mixture screw that I messed with. I looked it up in the FSM. Doe anyone know how to correctly adjust this? I messsed with it so much, I'm sure it's part of the reason the cars is wasting so much gas.

Thanks,
Gino

HAHA! My bad, Minute. I'm not that stupid to not know whether the car is carburated or not, but just didn't know what the "I' and the "s" stand for, and still don't. I'd imagine the "I" stands for injjection?

Normally the idle adjustment goes something like this..... Get the car idling at a decent speed @1000 rpm. Turn the adjustment in/ out and the idle should raise/ lower. Turn the adjustment until youve reached the highest idle. then go back in @1/4 turn. Readjust Idle speed screw until at correct rpms... This should be bout right...... Anyone else????

And the "s" stands for "shit". The hopeless chokeless carbs are a nightmare.

An adapter and a Weber 32/36 works great.

Hey, they can't be that bad - my g/f's B11 coupe is running the carb, and it gets incredible mileage. Something in the 40's on the highway, even cruising at 70-80mph...

Where did you get the O2 sensor guys? Maybe I should do that also, I fill up about once a week also, but I don't drive that much, I think I am getting about 22 combined hwy and street driving.
