Question How to adjust the carb?

I'm trying to get my 83 Sentra to pass smog but the damn thing is running way too rich. How do u adjust the air/fuel mixture? I'm also going to replace the cat and O2 sensor. Any help is appreciated.

Unless I'm mistaken, the carb has an air fuel ratio solenoid that controls mixture other than idle. There is an idle mixture screw in the rear of the carb base. You may have to punch out the hardened steel caps to get to it.

My sister owned my '85 Sentra a while back and gave up trying to get it to pass Cali emissions. She spent a ton and it was still a few points over. When I got it back I had the head redone, turns out 5 of 8 valves needed to be replaced.

Thanks. I'll try adjusting it, replacing the cat and sensor. If that doesn't work, then I my either sell it, scrap it, or turn into project track only car. Can you say SR20DET?

I was about to say that the '83 Sentras didn't have a feedback carburetor, but I guess they did in CA emissions. The other 48 states' cars still had a choke carburetor. They could actually be adjusted to try to pass emissions. But the electronic "hopeless chokeless"carbs have a mind of their own.
