I'm hoping someone has an idea, but I'm afraid of the answers.
My 1987 Sentra 5speed 1600cc coupe is popping out of 5th when under pressure. (ie. acceleration, uphill, etc.)
I was hoping it might be and issue regarding torque flex and there MAY be a shift linkage adjustment available but, I'm beginning to believe there may be a gear dogs problem . . .anyone else come across this with an easy out? Or am I looking at a tranny rebuild here?

I am having a similar problem with my 88 PULSAR E16i. Still get around in 4th but hard on the motor. No adjustments for my shift linkage. I am hoping its my poor motor mounts that are letting the engine move??? Any other thoughts? Replace or rebuild?
Yeesh! How could I have missed all this for so long??? Thanks Centurion. MNPULSAR, you might want to click on the "afraid" link in Centurion's post to have a look at this.

Did you read the thread that was linked? Yes, there's a transmission problem, but it's definitely not 'cashed'. It actually sounds like the repair is fairly simple.

***** I posted a pretty complete report on how to repair those somewhere. Believe it or not, I just spent over an hour searching for it. Couldn't remember if it was on Nissanforums, b15sentra.net, or SML [Sentra Mailing list]. Tried them all, found nothing. Drats! OK, here it is again: You need to replace 5th input shaft gear and coupling sleeve. Granted, it will be expensive to have done, or to do it with new parts. So here's the "cheapskate" way around it. First off, you DON'T need to remove the trans. I drain the trans, take out the driver's side axle, trans mount, and remove the trans side cover. I remove the 5th gear shift fork [the outermost one]. You simply remove the snap ring, that retains the 5th input gear, and then pull off [literally by hand] the said 5th input shaft gear and coupling sleeve. These are the two parts that need replacing. Now, you can go to the junkyard, and remove the very same parts [the same way], and replace them in your trans. That's it. As long as the trans you got the parts from was good [no popout], then you will have fixed your car cheaply. I have actually gone to junkyards, and have seen B12's with the side cover off of the trans, and 5th gear missing! So, I am not the only one who knows about this.

I thought I was a victim of the dreaded popout. For the longest time I drove with my hand on the shifter in fifth. My tranny had many leaks and I had to continuously refill it. A couple months ago I blew a head gasket and while I was fixing it I decided to tackle the tranny leaks. Had to buy new backup and neutral switches as well as retighten the bolts holding the two halves of the case together.
I've only had it pop out once since then and I immediately checked the fluid level. It was way overfilled. I let it drain down to the proper level and it hasn't popped out since....knock on wood.

Ha! Myetball, you just described my recent driving style. At first it seems pretty stretched out and cool, but it really sucks after a while, trying to sip coffee, drive uphill and pass someone with your hand holding the shifter in 5th. Dean, I'll wait until someone else answers you, of all the parts in a car, the ONLY one I get nervous fiddling with are transmissions.

Filling should be idiot-proof because you fill until fluid starts coming out of the fill hole (the fill hole faces the front of the car and is down low on the case with a square hole that fits a 1/2" socket wrench). Don't use auto tranny fluid. Try synthetic instead.
Cashed in my mind means "it doesn't work any more"... which is accurate. I never said it was a total loss...

Exactly the reason I built the console with the pop-out cup holders.
When filling the tranny, just make sure it's on level ground and not jacked up otherwise you will overfill it. The fill hole is kinda behind the tranny mount and takes a 1/2" square. I just use a 1/2" ratchet.
