correct me if I`m wrong but I fill my tranny by removing the speedo cable. I then fill until the fluid level is 2" from the rim. The plug at the botom should be used for drainage. This I got from the guys at www.Sentra.net
actually you have 2 plug on the tranny.... one you can see fron the front of the car... wich should be used to fill the thing... the drain one is on the driver side (left side) of the tranny and sits at the complete bottom of the tranny

***** Everything you just described is true, if you were working on an M10 Stanza wagon, or a T12 Stanza. But not on a Sentra.
One of my coupes has rust in the weld, right at the seam. (Obviously) Wondering if anyone has safely and reasonably filled in this area with a new weld/new steel combo?
Thoughts? Maybe only those of us with salt on our highways need to worry about this issue.

Lived in Gowanda, NY for my high school years. Most older cars in western NY are more bondo than metal. I'd recommend getting the rust removed and have some metal welded over the damaged area.

Not to argue with a guru like you but here is the instructions I recieved from the guys at www.Sentra.net. I gues it makes no diference how we fill our tranys does it?
I did this to my sports coupe recently and it works like a dream.
"Check manual transmission fluid
If you have a manual transmission car, you should check the fluid in the gear box. Manual transmission do not have a dipstick. You must check the level by removing the speedo drive pinion from the top of the transmission housing. The fluid level should be about 2½" from the opening. If you need to add fluid, use a funnel or a tube with a gear lube pump. Nissan recommends using API GL-4, Viscosity SAE 80W - 90 only. " http://www.sentra.net/tech/maintenan...?#manualtranny

***** Hello Dean GXE, No argument from me. It sounds reasonable that if you filled the trans with the proper amount of oil, removed the speedo gear, and measured how many inches below the top of the transmission housing the level ended up, that you'd be accurate. I just don't see any point in doing things the hard way. After all, I have never seen a Sentra transaxle without a fill plug. Whatever works!
