Can an E16i run safely on diagnostic mode

Can an E16i run safely on diagnostic mode while driving (Varying engine speeds and conditions), possibly for extended periods of time? I'm intrested in modes 1 & 2 (The mixture ratio). I NEED to be sure nothing burns up on me..

I have an 1985 E16. I can run safely in diagnostic mode but have not run it for an extended period of time continously. Have left it (by mistake) in diagnostic mode for serveral weeks. Didn't affect gas mileage or performace. Gas mileage is a good indicator if there is a problem overall.
