But I never noticed a shift into fourth. So yesterday I'm driving and I thought about it. I could EASILY tell the shifts to 2nd and third but as I accelerated on the freeway in 3rd from 60kph the speedometre just kepts going...
80.... 90... 100... and the RPMs kept increasing.
2500... 3000... 3300... and no shift to fourth.
So, am I daft (yes you can insult me all you like) or SHOULD my 1987 Pulsar NX XE with the E16i and an auto have four gears or is it only three? Seems odd with the Manual being a five speed... I, in retrospect, never remember ever feeling or noticing a shift before into any mythical fourth gear.
Not that I'm complaining, since 3rd takes me all the way from 60 kph to 150kph @ 4000-ish RPM.

***** I think what Marty is referring to is when the torque converter goes into lockup. This only occurs when you are at light throttle. If you floor it, it comes out of lockup.
Ahh, alrighty then. My transmission already shifts hard from 1st to 2nd when cold, I was thinking that might not be the only problem with it.
It also seemed odd that in my Owner's Book-thingy it says I can downshift into FIRST gear as long as I'm not going over 105kph. That must be a typo.. it says the same speed for 2nd gear. No way in hell am I going to downshift this auto into first while I'm doing 90kph down a highway.
And yeah, methinks it was originally only a 3 speed. Thanks.
if its an auto with an e16 anything , odds are its the strong , everlasting 3 speed tranny. rf.........dont get me started lol. i forgot the actual code and i dont have a manual in front of me
That helps, Thanks. There seems to be little information out on the web about Pulsars... so thank goodness for the Sentra.

I hope that's true, but my tranny (as I posted before) shifts hard from 1st to 2nd while cold. Hopefully it doesn't get any worse.

Most trannys shift hard when cold, especially when they get older
