got an 85 sentra writh a 1.6 and a 5 speed manual.
it's stuck in 5th and reverse.
and yes, it was wild trying to move a car that doesn't roll easily.
my question is, is there a common problem with these transmissions? what models came in the 85 year sentras? is there a problem with the shift forks or synchro's?
well, it was usable, as i put a few hundred miles on it like the way it was (Shift forks wornout). Once i pushed it too far when in 5th and was locked in high geaer, i was able to drive it home and get it over the pit in the garage, and by grabbing ahold of the shift rod and was able to get it out of 5th.
But the other day i let a friend drive it ,and he got it locked in 5th, and when he trtied to forcefully pull it out of 5th, the shifter moved the reverse fork into gear, but never pulled 5th fork out of gear, so now it's lockd in both.
I think something is worn out in the shift forks or a detain spring and ball, but, finding ANYTHING on a manual transaxle is getting to be a pain in the ass. i can't find any type of exploded views of any nissan transaxle, let alone a manual transaxle of anytype.
I did manage to locate 1 manual trans in the whole state of michigan. he wants $240 it. Might end up buying it
I love the gas milage with the car, as i drive a chevy350 and a dodagedakota that carries 1800# of tools and uliity topper, so, i'm in the works of finding something small and cheap on gas, and i can't go with the idea of buying a $10,000 car to save gas. in my opinion defeats the purpose of saving money. Ontop of that i can't make money with a car, so i don't see the idea of spending alot of money to buy a new one.
But, if you know some links to download some PDF's or anything with exploded views of a nissan manual transaxle, please post a link where i can aquire it.
split the case and found no metal shavings or worn gears. but a spring and checkball were laying in the bottom of the case. as to why it jumped out i don't know, but that's what caused the shift forks to shift wrong. as far as i can tell, it wasn't locked in 5th and reverse as i thought, but when i shifted out of 3rd, the fork didn't pull it out of gear and when i went into 5th the fork moved the shift collar and 1/2 engaged it.
called 1 dealer and they slapped me in the face when i asked for some copies of the service manual. they refused and their excuse was 'Those are our tools'.
called another one and they gladly photocopied me breakdowns of the cluster gear, input shaft, and shift forks assembly.
dealers dealers, all they want is your money.
i guess not of people at this forum have experience with transaxles? i'm not the 'pull and replace' for $1200 becuase of a $5 part. maybe everyone else is rich, i don't know.....
will look into it more on the weekend.

I had a synchro problem with my transmission on my B12 1988.
The gear was not locked in the 5th but it didn't want to stay there. So I had to open it to change the 5th gear synchro at this occasion I also changed the seals. It was not difficult with the exploded drawings.
na man i checked last friday, they had 8 sentra's between 83-86 and 19 from 87-96...........all for the picking. every time i go to my local pick-n-pull, i always rack up.

too bad we can't directly post imiages on the forums, but, here's link to a pic i took, as you can see, i circled where the end of the shift shaft goes into the case, and it seriously chucks around, and the ball and spring fell out of the little hole and were laying in the bottom of the case. Where it goes is just to the right of the red circle, the hole in the shiny disc shift control thinger.
but i can't beleive they would allow something like that to chuck in all directions easily 1/16th of an inch, maybe an 1/8th. a bushing or something goes in there? or is the case worn out? out the back of the case where the shift rod goes into the case (where the booty is) it's very tight and no way near any wear at all. seems like that would wear quicker then way at the other end (where circled) but i may be wrong. hopefully someone will shed some light on this mystery.
there was quite some peices of shavings, but not brass like synchro's, more of a brass like a bushing. is there supposed to be a bushing in there? i've cross checked between an 87 and 94 transaxle exploded views, and can't seem to see one in the diagrams, but, unfortunaly, those are the only 2 years i could get ahold of. 94 from online pdf, and 87 from dealer photocopies, as they only held ontop copies going back to 87. But something fell out somewhere and got all ground up. and it's softer then the gears are.
i'll try and keep my dns active as much as possible (lazy sometimes)
did some searching and found used transmissions from 100 to 650.
i figured i'd buy 6 $100's transmissions instead of 1 650. theyre all a mystery box until you open them.
i'd liek to shoot for 5x the good parts instead of 1 expensive bad one.
but on the bearing, some werido numbers.

googling isn't getting anywhere.
btw, havne't made an attempt to locate model numbers. i was on a mission to split the case and pull out the mainshaft, shift forks, cluster gear, etc. where would it be located? top somewhere? i live about ~45 mins from the garage, so, most of this is weekend work.
a u-wrench it, but, they don't hang ont o older stuff..
i gotta hit up salvage lots. i used car-parts.com or however it is. found maybe 70 transmisions in the neighbooring 5 states.
btw, there's an update link on that pic
i swear a bushing or something goes where that shiftshaft is circled. it's WAY sloppy. but nothing in the exploded view. gonna put bearings in it and stuff it together and see what it does.
