Smoke from Valve Cover

My 89 Pulsar 1.6 has been leaking oil since I got it. It seems now that when I fill the engine through the valve cover that it smokes out of the fill port. It just started and I know this can't be normal. Do you have any suggestions?

I plan on pulling the valve cover off to see how it looks inside.

I also have what I believe to be either timing chain chatter / clatter or valve chatter. From what I read in the maintenance manual the valves are hydrauliclly adjusted and there is nothing I can do but replace them. The timing chain is something that I really don't want to do but we all know how that is.

Also, she's been smoking really bad out the a%& end until it gets warmed up. Any ideas?

Thanks for any info you got.

Im going to assume that this happens shortly after you switch off the engine.

Since youve mentioned the car smokes, Id say what you are seeing is excessive blow-by gas rising up from the sump through the oil return wells
