Installing Gauges into E16i

Bought a set of gauges today (Oil press, ammeter, temp). Going to install them in the spot under my ashtray in my B12.

Anyone else install a set of these? How long did it take? Where did you hook up the oil pressure line to the engine?, what about the temp sensor?

Even the instructions for the ammeter are poor. Overall they are very vague. Anyone care to give some pointers?

Thanks.

Ammeter's suck. I'd really recommend against wiring it in. They don't even tell you much anyways. I'd get a voltmeter instead, infinitely more informative about your batery and charging conditions.

Thanks for the advice. I wanted the temp, and oil pressure gauge, but didnt really want the ammeter. It was cheaper to buy all 3, instead of buying 2 of them individually. Maybe I will go and buy the voltmeter that goes with the set I have and put it in place of the ammeter.

Yeah, almost all of those 3 in one sets come with an ammeter, drives me batty. Gotta buy the voltmeter seperate and toss the ammeter. Ahh well. Those are definately the 3 most useful gauges. Next two handy gauges are exhaust temp, and air fuel ratio gauge (hooks to the oxygen sensor).. But those are generally only needed for turbocharged engines.

The E16I Has a Temp Gauge already in it, why do you need another one? (Mine Does Anyway)

1. Mine does not work. For whatever reason, the needle does not go up. I dont think the car is overheating though, and the fan has issues, sometimes it doesnt come on, no matter how long the car idles (even on a hot day). I think something is messed up there, and I would like to wire the fan into a switch on the dash, and with the temp gauge, I can just switch it on when the temp gets high. Maybe even use a relay wired into the ignition, so if the car is off, the relay will be un-powered and thus I wouldnt forget and leave the fan on.

Any Ideas on how I would wire up a switch for the fan?

2. If the gauge was working, its still not very accurate. It gives a very poor indication of the actual temp.

3. I will admit that I am a gauge lover. I love the gauges, even though some of them are basically pointless. I dont care if people label me a "ricer", I love gauges.

Thier is a Coolant Temp Sensor that goes in the therm. housing that actually controls the guage.

Guages are cool, i agree, but you get in a car and see two oil pressure guages, 2 temp guages and 2 fuel pressure guages...

lol put masking tape over the 'Oil' and put 'Boost' on one, then put 'NOS' over fuel on the other one.

honda guys wont know the difference.

Ya know, my fan won't come on at an idle either, the problem is my car idles so low, the engine doesn't generate enough heat to be a problem. I say get the temp gauge before you go around trying to gerry rig something up. If you find that the engine is running too hot, and needs the fan running, I would replace the fan thermostat at the bottom of the radiator, along with the factory fan relay. That will most likely solve your problem if your fan motor hasn't died completely.
Toggle switches are very problematic, it's very easy to forget to turn them on until the car starts running funny, and at that point it's too late. Your much better off repairing the factory design.
